The death of Montaigne is described in some important documents such as the correspondence between Pierre de Brach, Justus Lipsius and Marie de Gournay, as well as in another letter written by Pasquier. What these «lettres du deuil» do is to reconstruct the philosophical meaning of death, using an entire universe of symbols to represent it. Previously, Montaigne had himself been the only person to witness La Boétie's death, of which he had deconstructed the abstract, merely speculative image (...) in order to emphasize its human dimension. A formal sequent system dealing with Menelaus' configurations is introduced in this paper. The axiomatic sequents of the system stem from 2-cycles of Δ-complexes. The Euclidean and projective interpretations of the sequents are defined and a soundness result is proved. This system is decidable and its provable sequents deliver incidence results. A cyclic operad structure tied to this system is presented by generators and relations.

In this study we examine the relationship between the perception of being objectified in the workplace and the self-assessment of worth on a personal level, i.e. social desirability and social utility. This relationship is thought to be mediated by self-objectification in the workplace. 241 participants responded to an online questionnaire to measure these different variables. The results confirm a negative relationship between the perception of being objectified and the people’s worth, as well as mediation through self-objectification. This phenomenon could describe (...) a deleterious spiral where the worker, through the internalization of a low social value, contributes to their dehu-manization at work. (shrink)

Sleep has long been a topic of fascination for artists and scientists. Why do we sleep? What function does sleep serve? Why do we dream? What significance can we attach to our dreams? We spend so much of our lives sleeping, yet its precise function is unclear, in spite of our increasing understanding of the processes generating and maintaining sleep. L'histoire de la pensée occidentale est jalonnée de grandes "querelles", comme celle des universaux ou celle des anciens et des modernes. Il était inévitable qu'une grande philosophie comme celle de Descartes donne lieu, du moment où elle a commencé à être diffusée, à de vifs débats. C'est à travers de tels débats, comme ceux qui, durant la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, ont opposé en France Gueroult et Alquié ou Foucault et Derrida, que, à notre époque, elle reste vivante. En (...) prenant en considération certains aspects surprenants de sa réception, on mesure à quel point une doctrine comme celle de Descartes, qu'aucune entreprise académique n'est parvenue à momifier, appelle des engagements de pensée pratiqués au présent, et répugne à une appréhension objective ou prétendue telle, qui, en l'appréhendant à distance, la relèguerait dans un passé révolu. L'oeuvre de Descartes reste pour nous encore en grande part une énigme, et ainsi elle constitue une invitation ou une provocation à penser, en nous tenant à l'écart des idées toutes faites : c'est par là, et non par les certitudes acquises dont elle serait porteuse, qu'elle se révèle incontournable pour qui s'intéresse à la philosophie. Jean-Pierre Faye analyse la conférence méconnue de Carl Schmitt : « Economie saine dans un Etat fort », tenue le 23 novembre 1932 devant les membres de « L’Union au Long Nom » (ou « Union pour la conservation des intérêts économiques communs en Rhénanie et Westphalie »). Schmitt y énonce la nécessité pour l’Allemagne d’un « Etat total », équivalent allemand à ses yeux de « l’État totalitaire » de l’Italie fasciste. Cette prise de parole aura un effet (...) décisif : trente-cinq représentants de la finance et de l’industrie allemandes, auditeurs de la conférence, adresseront une pétition à Hindenburg, président du Reich. Ils l’inciteront à appeler le « chef du grand mouvement » au poste de chancelier du Reich. Ce « mouvement » est le déjà criminel NSDAP : le Parti national-socialiste ouvrier allemand, le parti « nazi ». Le 30 janvier 33, Hitler sera chancelier. En neuf semaines, la conférence de Schmitt aura eu pour effet d’abattre tous les obstacles à l’avènement du Troisième Reich. La formule de « l’Etat total » a donc su transmettre aux temps et aux langages une charge à l’énergie insoupçonnée, porteuse des plus grands crimes. Ainsi est révélée la responsabilité centrale de Schmitt dans la mise en place du nazisme. Ce juriste, qui étrangement apparaît pour beaucoup aujourd’hui comme un penseur politique de référence, n’a d’abord avancé qu’une seule carte d’un jeu mortifère. Mais c’était une carte maîtresse, elle était dangereusement efficace pour faire passer le pire dans l’Histoire. Il était intéressant de lire en parallèle les « Journaux » de Schmitt et de mesurer l’attention portée par le juriste aux événements, dans les semaines qui précèdent et suivent l’arrivée d’Hitler à la chancellerie du Reich. Ce qui frappe est cependant la banalité quotidienne qui transparaît dans ces notes. Si ce n’est, peut-être, qu’un mot va lui paraître acquérir un poids nouveau : « Jude », « juif ». C’est son propre rôle, dans le nazisme, à lui Carl Schmitt, qu’il va découvrir par là... (shrink)

Que cherchent les écrivains qui, au risque de passer sous les radars médiatiques, n'empruntent pas l'autoroute du récit linéaire et du reportage romancé? La voie étroite de la poésie débouche sur des formes minoritaires et sur des consistances bizarres de prose. Comme s'il fallait d'urgence ranimer, redessiner les mots en troublant leur usage. Mais dans quel but, au juste? De temps à autre, on m'invite à exposer des idées. Mon choix du sujet est toujours intéressé. Il concerne ce que je (...) pratique : la poésie et la prose narrative surtout, un peu le montage et le dessin. Il s'agit de parler en s'adressant à des gens en particulier. La dispute n'est jamais loin. Le ton n'est pas toujours sérieux. Limité par le temps, je procède quelquefois par simples assertions, qui se lisent alors comme les têtes de chapitres manquants. Esquisses d'une réflexion que d'autres prolongeraient, ces brefs discours sont ensuite laissés en l'état. Ils portent, donc, sur des inventions marginales : poèmes prosaïques, visuels ou animés, récits digressifs ou hétérogènes, figures de monstres, films dansants, fantômes tracés. Ils suggèrent une certaine politique des formes. Ils plaident pour une imagination technique assez négligée — ou mal vue — en littérature. (shrink)

An English translation of Pierre Bayle's posthumous last book, Entretiens de Maxime et de Themiste (1707), in which Bayle defends his skeptical position on the problem of the evil. This book is often cited and attacked by G.W. Leibniz in his Theodicy (1710). Over one hundred pages of original philosophical and historical material introduce the translation, providing it with context and establishing the work's importance.

Anne Pasquier | : Le sermon Dolbeau 26 provient d’un manuscrit datant de la deuxième moitié du xve siècle qui sortit de l’oubli grâce à la publication, en 1990, d’un catalogue de manuscrits de la Stadtbibliothek de Mayence. Découvert par François Dolbeau, ce sermonnaire contient 63 sermons d’Augustin et un de Césaire d’Arles. L’intérêt pour ces oeuvres est d’autant plus grand que plusieurs des sermons sont partiellement ou complètement inédits. C’est le cas du sermon D. 26 en lequel s’élaborent (...) plusieurs réflexions qu’Augustin exprimera par la suite dans la Cité de Dieu. Dans le cadre de cet article, seront examinés les thèmes et les enjeux identitaires que l’on peut déceler en particulier dans les chapitres 1 à 9 de ce sermon. | : The sermon called Dolbeau 26 is part of a manuscript dating from the second half of the 15th century which came out of oblivion thanks to the publication, in 1990, of a catalogue of manuscripts in the Stadtbibliothek Mainz. Discovered by François Dolbeau, this manuscript contains 62 different sermons from Augustine, and one from Caesarius of Arles. The fact that 26 of those sermons from Augustine are partially or completely unknown explains their great interest. This is the case of the sermon D. 26 in which Augustine develops many reflections that will be later expressed in the City of God. The theoretical literature on vertical relationships usually assumes that beliefs about secret contracts take specific forms. In a recent paper, Eguia et al. (Games Econ Behav 109:465–483,2018) propose a new selection criterion that does not impose any restriction on beliefs. In this article, we extend their criterion by generalizing it to risk-averse retailers, and we show that risk aversion modifies the size of the belief subsets that support each equilibrium. We conduct an experiment which revisits that of Eguia et al. (...) (Games Econ Behav 109:465–483,2018). We design a new treatment effect on equilibrium selection depending on the retailers’ risk sensitivity. Experimental results confirm the treatment effect: the more sensitivity there is towards risk, the more the equilibrium played is consistent with passive beliefs. In addition, extending Eguia et al.’s (Games Econ Behav 109:465–483,2018) criterion to risk-averse retailers improves its predictive power on the equilibria played, especially for a population of retailers with moderate to extreme risk aversion. In Kant and the Demands of Self-Consciousness, Pierre Keller examines Kant's theory of self-consciousness and argues that it succeeds in explaining how both subjective and objective experience are possible. Previous interpretations of Kant's theory have held that he treats all self-consciousness as knowledge of objective states of affairs, and also that self-consciousness can be interpreted as knowledge of personal identity. By developing this striking new interpretation Keller is able to argue that transcendental self-consciousness underwrites a general theory of objectivity (...) and subjectivity at the same time. From the observation that global education systems are failing to produce beaming adults, this article questions the meaning of the words generally used to discuss education and new teaching methods. Sidestepping the panacea of technology as the holy grail, it suggests ideas for exploring other possible educational forms, such as those guided by the renewal of humanism or neurosciences. Then, this article presents a model of understanding of man and his activities, leading to the conception of a work system that (...) makes the most of the evolution of contemporary sciences, such as transdisciplinary thinking and transpersonal psychology. It gives an example of a concrete organization in vocational training for future teachers and proposes an evaluation of five years of practices that have encouraged transformations towards individual and collective achievement.
