De nombreuses recherches ont mis en évidence le fait que les épicuriens n’étaient pas complètement hostiles à la poésie en général mais qu’ils refusaient probablement les compositions ou procédures poétiques qui ne conduisent pas à la fin naturelle du plaisir « catastématique », c’est-à-dire le bonheur. Dans cet article, nous nous demanderons donc si les épicuriens ont inventé une poésie cathartique de type positif ou s’ils ont simplement rejeté toutes les formes de catharsis poétique en les décrivant comme des (...) expériences négatives. Nous constaterons dans ce travail de recherche, divisé en trois parties, que la première hypothèse est plus probable que la seconde. Dans un premier temps, nous démontrerons que les épicuriens ont effectivement reconnu l’existence d’une catharsis positive, transmise par la raison et l’enseignement de la philosophie, ayant la capacité de faire disparaître les émotions négatives qui entravent l’accès au bonheur (l’amour, la peur du divin, le désir excessif, etc.). L’idée développée, dans un second temps, établit qu’Épicure et ses disciples pourraient s’être opposés à la catharsis tragique décrite dans la Poétique d’Aristote, parce qu’elle implique de passer par des passions négatives telles que la pitié et la terreur. Cette expérience esthétique entrerait alors en contradiction avec l’idéal épicurien du plaisir comme absence de trouble et d’inquiétude psychique. Enfin, dans un troisième temps, nous exposerons l’idée selon laquelle les épicuriens pourraient avoir accepté une seule forme de catharsis poétique : celle facilitant le processus de purification effectué par la raison et l’enseignement de la philosophie. Un exemple possible de cette pratique est le poème De rerum natura de Lucrèce dans lequel la poésie n’est pas considérée comme cathartique en soi, mais si et seulement si elle assiste la philosophie épicurienne dans sa conquête du bonheur. La poética de Aristóteles gira alrededor de la definición de tragedia, y de un análisis de la construcción del Mythos, su contenido y sus exigencias formales. Así, la mímesis se liga a lo universal, lo verosímil y/o lo necesario; penetra en el plano de lo efectual, determinante en la consideración de lo trágico. De ello se desprende un diferencial platónico en la consideración de la Mímesis. El texto penetra el contenido de la Catharsis, término apenas mencionado en la definición (...) de tragedia pero en el que se contiene la fuerza problematizada de la concepción aristotélica de la poesía. Al final se intenta relacionar dicha noción con el Eleos (compasión) y el Phobos (temor), que soportan el carácter comunitario del quehacer poético. (shrink)

Dans ces "bulles" de pensées, traversées par un fourmillement de références à l'histoire culturelle et à la philosophie classique, Pascale Seys porte un regard "dézoomé", tantôt grave, tantôt léger, sur nos façons d'agir et de penser. Platon n’est pas sérieux lorsqu’il conduit Socrate à déduire que la poésie doit être essentiellement narrative avec juste un peu de dialogue. Non seulement cette argumentation est-elle intentionnellement fautive, mais Platon crée aussi un Socrate qui obscurcit à dessein une distinction fondamentale. Le Socrate de Platon fait ensuite semblant d’être confus par son propre obscurcissement. En nous obligeant à nous frayer un passage à travers les broussailles de son argumentation erronée, Platon nous donne l’occasion d’avoir une participation plus profonde aux (...) véritables problèmes sous-jacents et de découvrir son thème : une bonne personne est stoïquement indifférente à la fois au malheur et au bonheur. Etienne Gilson se propose de definir les attitudes successives de Dante a l'egard de la philosophie : quelle nature lui assignait-il, quelle fonction lui attribuait-il, quelle place lui octroyait-il. Il ne s'agit en l'occurrence pas d'examiner la philosophie que Dante a formule, mais bien au contraire, partant de l'analyse de ses textes, de tenter d'en degager les manieres dont il envisageait et usait de la philosophie. D'une certaine maniere, l'on ne s'interroge pas sur les pensees philosophiques mais sur la pratique (...) philosophique. D'une rencontre d'enfance avec Beatrice, Dante en fit l'un des plus grands portraits de la femme au Moyen Age, et trouva dans la philosophie, allegoriquement nommee "la noble dame", la consolation a la perte de Beatrice. Entre la Vita Nuova et la Divine Comedie, Gilson nous offre ici une image particulierement originale du lettre italien en nous montrant comment Dante, autant poete que theologien, elabora une pratique philosophique qui releve d'abord de son oeuvre poetique. Comprendre le personnage de Beatrice est donc pour Gilson la cle de la comprehension de la philosophie meme de Dante, celle qui fait jouer et se repondre poesie et theologie, celle qui permet d'apprehender sous chacun de ces deux aspects l'originalite du penseur italien : la philosophie se doit d'etre morale et pratique si tant est qu'elle veuille mener les hommes a l'etat de bonheur. En science, en politique, en éthique la philosophie semble avoir échouée. Reste l'esthétique, la beauté. Peut-elle encore, sinon sauver le monde, ressusciter la pensée? Un appel à rénover l'héritage occidental à partir de l'art de la poésie, du sensible. Une métaphysique incarnée. Et si la métaphysique était le plus grand bienfait de l'histoire de l'humanité? Partant d’une toile rassemblant une série d’esquisses peintes montrant un lionceau, cette étude propose d’aborder la production de Rosa Bonheur sous l’angle des biographies animales. L’article se focalise sur les modèles lion·ne·s cotoyés par l’artiste au cours de sa carrière. Il s’agit de mettre au jour la complexité de ces rapports à partir de l’étude de l’œuvre et de l’apport des données et des témoignages que les quelques biographies anciennes de l’artiste consacrent à ces animaux.

Catharsis and tragic pleasure according to Aristotle. According to Aristotle, tragedies induce three different kinds of pleasures. First, there is the cognitive pleasure of imitation, since it is pleasurable to recognize in the imitation an object one already knows. Second, there is the aesthetic pleasure linked to the material parameters of the tragedy, that is the language, the show, and the performance. Third, there is the “specific” pleasure of tragedy. This specific pleasure is linked to the affects of pity (...) and fear through the process of catharsis. Although pity and fear are two opposite affects depending on the position of the subject relatively to an event, the spectator of the tragedy is bound to experience both of them simultaneously because of the ethical similarity the playwright must keep between him and the tragic hero. But pity and fear are also two opposite affects on the physiological level : pity is a warm affect, fear a cold one. Catharsis is then a physiological balancing of pity by fear, of warmth by cold, and reciprocally, and this continuous suppression of excesses of temperature through the tragic imitation, while bringing a feeling of relief and pleasure, rids the spectator of all excessive affects. Catharsis provides a healthy and hygienic pleasure, and so can Aristotle effectively reply to Plato’s criticism of tragedy. (shrink)

This paper is not so much a reading of Shakespeare's play as reading through As You Like It to the kinds of resolution and catharsis that can exist in comedy. We will find two kinds of resolution and catharsis, and within each kind two sub-types. We will then read through the figures of the play and the catharses available in it to the kinds of culture that need or can use each type of catharsis.

Razón, poesía, historia.--La cuestión del estoicismo español.--El querer.

This paper aims at analysing the ancient Greek notions of catharsis (clearing up, cleaning), to holon (the whole) and therapeia (therapy, treatment, healing) to assess whether they may be of help in addressing a set of questions concerning the didactics of medical ethics: What do medical students actually experience and learn when they attend classes of medical ethics? How should teachers of medical ethics proceed didactically to make students benefit morally from their teaching? And finally, to what extent and (...) in what forms and formats can the kind of cathartic treatment envisaged by Plato still be considered a necessary preliminary to moral learning? The three questions will be addressed by means of a reconstructive analysis and assessment of the Platonic notions of catharsis and holistic therapy present in the Charmides and the Sophist. Besides, the didactic potential of Plato’s dialogue form and moral regimen will be tried out. The ultimate aim is to investigate the possibilities of developing a therapeutic conception of medical ethics. (shrink)

In the context of a French school in crisis, the article defends a strong idea: the professional exercise, as degraded and dented as it may be, can only « hold » if there is a link between the teacher and his job that goes far beyond the contingencies of daily work. It is this link, which remains despite everything, that we will identify as the « happiness of the profession » of the primary school teacher. The problematization mobilizes the reflections (...) of Kant and Osty to circumscribe the object by positioning happiness on the side of the profession (and not on the side of the work done). It is extended by a theorization of the « happiness of the profession », which relies on Freire and Jullien to define it as a potentiality, an inaccessible promise. It is then operationalized by the research on similar notions in the case of teachers, which is translated into the methodological choice of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered by the networks and included a quantitative component (an assessment of the potential of 45 concrete situations for « job happiness ») and a qualitative component (an open and spontaneous definition written by the respondents). The results of the survey develop the 10 components of « job happiness » (quantitative approach) (quantitative approach) and the triptych of the definition of this happiness (qualitative approach). Roman Ingarden was a prominent Polish philosopher, phenomenologist, and student of Edmund Husserl. A characteristic feature of his works was the almost complete absence of analyzes from the history of philosophy. That is why it is so surprising that right after the end of World War II, the first text analyzed when Ingarden started working at the Jagiellonian University was Aristotle’s “Poetics.” Ingarden published the results of his research in Polish in 1948 in “Kwartalnik Filozoficzny” and in the early 1960s (...) his essay was translated and published in the renowned American magazine “The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism” as “A Marginal Commentary on Aristotle’s Poetics.” As far as I know today, this text does not arouse much interest among the many commentators and followers of Ingarden’s philosophy. Perhaps this state of affairs is justified: Ingarden’s own ideas are only repeated here, and their usefulness in the meaning of “Poetics” remains far from obvious. However, I think that this relative obscurity is worth considering now, because it shows how modern reason tries to control ancient concepts. The main purpose of this article is therefore to recon- struct the strategy by which philosophy tames the text of “Poetics,” especially its concepts such as catharsis and mimesis. The discovery and presentation of these treatments would not have been possible were it not for the mimetic theory of René Girad, which provides anthropological foundations for a critique of philosophical discourse. The aim of this paper is to give a new interpretation of Aristotle's account of the emotions evoked in the course of engaging with tragic narratives that would give rise to a coherent account of catharsis. Very briefly, the proposal is that tragedy triggers vicarious emotions and catharsis is the purgation of such emotions. I argue that this interpretation of “fear and pity” as vicarious emotions is consistent with both Aristotle's account of emotions and his account of (...) class='Hi'>catharsis and also with his choice of examples for tragedies that trigger catharsis. Die Poesie ist für Hegel die Endform der Kunst, in der die Kunst im Allgemeinen durch die Religion überwunden wird. Die These, dass die Poesie den anderen Künsten, d.h. der Architektur, der Skulptur, der Malerei und der Musik, überlegen ist, spricht von einer besonderen Hierarchisierung und Periodisierung, die Hegel zwischen die verschiedenen Kunstformen einführt. Das Kriterium für diese Hierarchisierung und Periodisierung ist offensichtlich das gleiche, nach dem Hegel die Kunst wiederum als eine der Religion und der Philosophie unterlegene Form betrachtet. (...) Dass die Poesie eine den anderen Künsten überlegene Kunstform ist, ist auf den ersten Blick eine überraschende These; und sie wirkt noch überraschender, wenn man sie durch die These ergänzt, dass die Kunst wiederum durch die Religion und die Philosophie als weitere Phasen eines linearen Prozesses aufgehoben wird. Um was für einen linearen Prozess handelt es sich hier eigentlich? Ein linearer Prozess wohin? Der Prozess, von dem Hegel in diesem Kontext spricht, ist ein Erkenntnisprozess, und zwar ein ziemlich spezifischer Erkenntnisprozess, nämlich Erkenntnis des Absoluten. Die Poesiegattung, die für Hegel die Endphase der Kunst ausmacht, ist das moderne Drama, in dessen Zentrum die Darstellung des Charakters und der Handlungen seiner verschiedenen Gestalten steht. Was hat das alles aber mit dem Absoluten zu tun? Was haben das Drama und seine Subgattungen - der Tragödie, der Komödie, der Satire usw. - mit Religion und Philosophie zu tun? Hegel verbindet außerdem die Kunst mit dem Absoluten als eine Erkenntnisform desselben. Aber in welchem Sinne ist die Kunst Erkenntnis? Ist Kunst nicht eher Darstellung und Ausdruck subjektiver Gefühle und Ideen - und eben nicht ein Erfassen der Realität, eben nicht eine Erkenntnisform der Wirklichkeit? Um den allgemeinen Sinn von Hegels Ästhetik und dadurch die besondere Rolle, die er darin der Poesie zuschreibt, verstehen zu können, ist es unentbehrlich, die oben gestellten Fragen zu beantworten. Ein theoretisches und exegetisches Modell zu liefern, das imstande ist, eine solche Aufgabe zu erfüllen, ist das Ziel dieses Beitrags. (shrink)

Le bonheur : idée neuve ou trop vieux rêve? Douce utopie ou vrai projet? En tout cas, quand un philosophe se lève avec Jean- Jacques Rousseau en 1749, c'est en son nom : le bonheur constitue son horizon et son programme, sa vocation et son présent, à la fois sa quête personnelle et le seul don qu'il estime devoir à l'homme. Or il se trouve que, face au philosophe Rousseau, se met bientôt à parler aussi le romancier Jean-Jacques, et du (...) même coup face au penseur le croyant. Quant au bonheur, les deux instances sont d'accord sur sa définition et sur tous les aspects qui en sont parties intégrantes, conscience, estime de soi, liberté, dignité, sagesse ; de même, elles sont d'accord pour identifier ses pires ennemis, ces fétiches que sont l'avoir, le pouvoir et la gloire, tout ce qui suscite les croyances constitutives du " religieux mondain ". Mais une fois les idoles écartées, il reste Dieu, ou le " religieux divin ". Que devient alors le bonheur pris ainsi entre Jean-Jacques et Rousseau? Peut-il être compatible avec cette ultime croyance? C'est tout le rapport du bonheur et de la croyance, quelle qu'elle soit, qui est ici étudié à travers l'oeuvre du Citoyen de Genève. (shrink)

Au début du XIIIe siècle, les maîtres de la Faculté des arts de l�Université de Paris furent les premiers à commenter les trois premiers livres de l�Ethique à Nicomaque d�Aristote, qui venaient d�être traduits en latin par Burgundio de Pise. Ils y rencontraient des conceptions diamétralement opposées à celles de la doctrine chrétienne dont leur culture était imprégnée. Alors que la théorie aristotélicienne du bonheur (eudaimonia) attribue à l�homme un rôle décisif dans la réalisation de son bonheur, les maîtres ès (...) arts de cette époque préfèrent insister sur la perfection du bonheur transcendant et incréé. Pour commenter l�Éthique à Nicomaque, ils puisent aux sources néoplatoniciennes et dans le fonds théologique chrétien. (shrink)

La question de l’union entre sagesse et bonheur se situe au cœur même de la tradition morale. Dans la perspective la plus traditionnelle, croître en sagesse revient automatiquement à augmenter son bonheur. La philosophie est ainsi la voie royale pour parvenir à un bonheur plus durable que dans la conception vulgaire, en détachant l’esprit des choses inessentielles et en l’amenant à connaître les vérités qui lui fourniront l’aliment le plus approprié à sa nature réelle. Néanmoins, le lien analytique entre sagesse (...) et bonheur a également été critiqué par la démonstration que l’effondrement de l’un des deux termes n’entraînait pas nécessairement l’effondrement de l’autre. Au premier chef de ces critiques se situent les sceptiques, qui de l’Antiquité à la période moderne s’accordent à nier la possibilité d’une connaissance réelle, tout en maintenant généralement la possibilité d’être heureux. Inversement, cette accessibilité du bonheur a pu être critiquée sans que soit remise en question la connaissance elle-même : c’est ce que révèlent les philosophies tragiques, qui assimilent plutôt sagesse et souffrance. Par la diversité des contributions, qui puisent principalement dans les traditions ancienne et moderne, mais offrent également quelques perspectives contemporaines et non euro-centrées, le présent volume illustre l’affrontement de ces deux grands courants dans l’histoire de la philosophie, et permet de penser à nouveaux frais ce problème essentiel à la morale qu’est l’utilité ou l’inutilité de la connaissance pour être heureux. Satisfaction, well-being, pleasure or happiness are some of the terms used by researchers who attempt to characterize the positive emotions and experiences of teachers in their professional practice. Without choosing between these different conceptual frameworks, this article aims to identify the determinants of this “happiness”, particularly in relation to the expectations upon entering the profession. It emphasizes the importance of student-related factors, in particular the quality of the relationship that teachers have with their students and the quality of learning, and (...) their reciprocal influence. Training courses to strengthen teachers' skills in these two areas are then seen as a way to increase the happiness of learning and teaching. The article finally insists on the importance of the evaluation of the trainings, by presenting a currently under development device to evaluate a training action aiming at reinforcing the psychosocial skills of 1st grade students, which is carried out in a school district of the Paris region. This device uses the CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) tool, not yet well known in France. (shrink)

This chapter presents Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Samuel Beckett’s Trilogy as modern fictions with ancient-skeptical ambitions. Whether in the affective domain (Flaubert) or in the cognitive (Beckett), the aim is to help the reader achieve a position of studied neutrality—ataraxia, époché—thanks not to an a priori decision but to the mutual cancellation of opposing tendencies. Understanding Flaubert and Beckett in this way allows us, first, to enrich our sense of what “catharsis” may involve; second, to see why the (...) apparently odious Charles, in Madame Bovary, suddenly becomes a deeply touching figure; and third, to recognize the severe limitations of empathy-based moralist theories of fiction. This article aims at analysing Aristotle’s poetic conception of catharsis to assess whether it may be of help in enlightening the particular didactic challenges involved when training medical students to cope morally with complex or tragic situations of medical decision-making. A further aim of this investigation is to show that Aristotle’s criteria for distinguishing between history and tragedy may be employed to reshape authentic stories of sickness into tragic stories of sickness. Furthermore, the didactic potentials of tragic stories of (...) sickness will be tried out. The ultimate aim is to investigate whether the possibilities of developing a therapeutic conception of medical ethics researched in a previous article on catharsis and moral therapy in Plato may be strengthened through the hermeneutics of the Aristotelian conception of tragic catharsis. Dans ce livre jubilatoire, Jean Salem développe une approche originale sur la question qui fait recette aujourd'hui dans les librairies, dans les gazettes, dans les sectes, chez les spirites et dans tous les endroits où l'on cause : pouvons-nous espérer le bonheur quand même? le bonheur est-il praticable, jusqu'en ces temps de catastrophe? avons-nous seulement le droit de prétendre à jouir d'un tel luxe quand l'horizon paraît bouché et que le sol semble s'enfoncer sous nos pieds? quand il n'y a (...) plus d'horizon. Ce livre rompt avec l'idéologie du bonheur individuel, du bonheur New Age, du bonheur " guimauve " et désengagé, induit par la société de consommation. On y entend parler non seulement du souverain bien des Anciens, mais aussi du bonheur d'agir, de résister, en un mot : du bonheur de lutter. Dans un style enlevé, drôle et polémique, Jean Salem mène son enquête au sujet du bonheur : " sur ce qui en a été dit par quelques bons esprits du passé, et sur les moyens de ne pas le manquer tout à fait en un temps d'inquiétude et de catastrophe. Jonathan Lear argues that the established purgation, purification, and cognitive stimulation interpretations of Aristotle’s concepts of catharsis and tragic pleasure are off the mark. In response, Lear defends an anti-cognitivist account, arguing that it is the pleasure associated with imaginatively “living life to the full” and yet hazarding nothing of importance that captures Aristotle’s understanding of catharsis and tragic pleasure. This analysis reveals that Aristotle’s account of imagination in conjunction with his understanding of both specific intellectual virtues and (...) rational emotions of an educated citizen not only tells against Lear’s anti-cognitivist construal, but also divulges an alternative cognitive stimulation reading. Résumé La poésie est essentiellement liée au silence et peut être conçue dans ce sens comme une sorte de résistance contre le bruit de l’actualité ou de rébellion contre le lieu commun. Àl’affût du son originel qui voyage à travers les cultures, elle s’efforce d’exprimer l’inexprimable. Car la poésie est le jeu des possibilités. En se jouant des possibilités, elle incite l’être humain à habiter son monde différemment.

The objective of the article is to understand how a happiness engineering device centered on knowledge-relationship allows for « transformational training ». The methodology is based on a survey of semi-structured interviews and on a thematic content analysis of the dissertations. It was conducted with CPE trainees and teacher trainees in the Prevention-Health-Environment course. The results analyze the types of knowledge-relations in the realization of the experimental device by the trainees and the formative dimensions associated with learning in such an (...) engineering. Dans cette contribution, nous nous penchons sur la figure du bonheur paradoxal qui, dans les "Rêveries du promeneur solitaire" de Rousseau, se définit au sein d’un jeu de tensions multiples. Si le bonheur exige la solitude, il est toujours hanté par l’altérité ; si sa source est en soi-même, il ne cesse toutefois de dépendre de circonstances contingentes ; et si, enfin, il s’éprouve tout entier dans le sentiment, il s’agit pourtant d’un sentiment augmenté d’un caractère réfléchi ou, pour mieux (...) dire, redoublé dans le souvenir que retrace l’écriture. Dans tous les cas, ces antinomies du bonheur – sur lesquelles nous reviendrons longuement plus loin – s’enracinent dans une marqueterie de références dont l’hétérogénéité est l’expression d’un dialogue tendu au sein duquel, comme nous souhaiterions d’abord le montrer, la philosophie morale des Anciens se réinvente en adoptant le langage, éminemment moderne, du sentiment. On the basis of the idea of autopoetic system of human perception and reasoning, the author of the article proves the identity of truth and beauty. This identity is detected in the result of the manifestations of the ‘mental catharsis‘ inherent in the heuristic activity of the subject. The activity of the thinking subject is regulated by a mechanism of mental ordering, where the streamlining by beauty takes first place. Beauty as excess of the limit has no logical basis, (...) but it has systematic justification as a form complying its purpose. Purpose complying form is harmonious: ontologically this is manifested in the effectiveness, feasibility, and optimality as ‘vital force‘; this is manifested epistemically in reaching the depth and perfection as ‘mental strength‘. The formal aspect of ‘mental strength‘ is interpreted as logical isolation, the integration of thoughts, and coherence of parts in a whole. The content of ‘mental strength‘ is understood as synthetic system of elements combined in the unity of understanding. The unity of the understanding is the highest consolidation principle of thinking of the subject, based on the reasonable potency of the soul. Reasonable potency of the soul is emergent by its nature: the intelligence evolves by generating anticipatory concepts produced by creative autopoiesis, which develops promising ideas according to the laws of tropical connotative imagination-based approval. The operating mode of the imagination, intellectual browsing of possibilities, is supported by techniques of spontaneous changing the world, a phantasmagoric metamorphosis. That is a tropical unity of thought and speech material, which becomes joint according to the laws of harmony and beauty. (shrink)
