“Frequent Frames” in German Child-Directed Speech: A Limited Cue to Grammatical Categories.Barbara Stumper, Colin Bannard, Elena Lieven & Michael Tomasello - 2011 - Cognitive Science 35 (6):1190-1205.
Mintz (2003) found that in English child-directed speech, frequently occurring frames formed by linking the preceding (A) and succeeding (B) word (A_x_B) could accurately predict the syntactic category of the intervening word (x). This has been successfully extended to French (Chemla, Mintz, Bernal, & Christophe, 2009). In this paper, we show that, as for Dutch (Erkelens, 2009), frequent frames in German do not enable such accurate lexical categorization. This can be explained by the characteristics of German including a less restricted (...)

The Concept of Motion in Ancient Greek Thought: Foundations in Logic, Method, and Mathematics.Barbara M. Sattler - 2020 - New York, NY, USA: Cambridge University Press.
This book examines the birth of the scientific understanding of motion. It investigates which logical tools and methodological principles had to be in place to give a consistent account of motion, and which mathematical notions were introduced to gain control over conceptual problems of motion. It shows how the idea of motion raised two fundamental problems in the 5th and 4th century BCE: bringing together being and non-being, and bringing together time and space. The first problem leads to the exclusion (...)

    Learning to represent exact numbers.Barbara W. Sarnecka - 2015 - Synthese 198 (Suppl 5):1001-1018.
This article focuses on how young children acquire concepts for exact, cardinal numbers. I believe that exact numbers are a conceptual structure that was invented by people, and that most children acquire gradually, over a period of months or years during early childhood. This article reviews studies that explore children’s number knowledge at various points during this acquisition process. Most of these studies were done in my own lab, and assume the theoretical framework proposed by Carey. In this framework, the (...)

    Thinking in action.Barbara Tversky & Angela Kessell - 2014 - Pragmatics and Cognition 22 (2):206-223.
When thought overwhelms the mind, the mind uses the body and the world. Several studies reveal ways that people alone or together use gesture and marks on paper to structure and augment their thought for comprehension, inference, and discovery. The studies show that the mapping of thought to gesture or the page is more direct than the arbitrary mapping to language and suggest that these forms of visual/spatial/action representation are used to “translate” language into mental representations. It is argued that (...)

Belief and resistance: dynamics of contemporary intellectual controversy.Barbara Herrnstein Smith - 1997 - Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.
An extended analysis and account of the psychological/social/cognitive dynamics of intellectual controversy. The immediate focus is the recurrent failure of intellectual engagement, in encounters having to do with with truth, knowledge, language, science, and/or objectivity, between, on the one hand, rationalist-realist-objectivist philosophers and/or those they have instructed and, on the other hand, constructivist-pragmatist ("postmodern") theorists and/or those persuaded by their critiques and/or alternative views. Individual chapters examine critiques and defenses of objectivist-rationalist views in law, politics, literary studies, ethics, communication theory, (...)

Liberal colonialism, domestic colonies and citizenship.Barbara Arneil - 2012 - History of Political Thought 33 (3):491-523.
There is a growing body of literature which argues that the two major theories of liberal citizenship (those of John Locke and J.S. Mill) were deeply enmeshed with both colonization (the processes by which the imperial state takes over the land and/or sovereignty of another country) and colonialism (the theoretical framework by which colonization is justified). This article, builds upon this literature but asks whether the existence of hundreds of domestic colonies within (as opposed to outside) the borders of Britain (...)

Zwischen Phänomenologie und Psychoanalyse: Im interdisziplinären Gespräch mit Bernhard Waldenfels.Barbara Schellhammer (ed.) - 2021 - Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG.
Every day we are confronted with numerous alienating phenomena and equally alienating ways of dealing with them. The question is: How we can deal with them in a positive way? In his latest book, Bernhard Waldenfels powerfully demonstrates that it is not enough to only examine the otherness of the other if we disregard the stranger in ourselves. He argues for a responsive stance that dares to confront the uncanniness of our experience. How valuable this is—for psychiatric contexts, sociopolitical challenges (...)

  12. Time is Double the Trouble: Zeno’s Moving Rows.Barbara Sattler - 2015 - Ancient Philosophy 35 (1):1-22.
Zeno’s Moving Rows paradox is the only paradox among his four paradoxes of motion that is usually skipped over as being of no philosophical interest. This paper aims to give a new diagnosis of the Moving Rows paradox, a diagnosis that allows us to see it as raising a philosophically interesting problem concerning the relationship of time, space, and motion. It shows the consequences of confusing time’s dependence on the space covered in a motion with time’s dependence on the motion (...)

To say that mental phenomena are self-intimating means, roughly, that there is no more to them than what meets the "inner" eye. Gilbert Ryle was the first to emphasize this as one of the central features of the classical Cartesian picture of mind. He wrote.

Through analyses of Smith's own work as well as applications of his concerns to new situations, historic periods, and regions, the contributors test the adequacy and applicability of Smith's ideas and thus provide an indirect assessment of his influence and legacy in the field of Religious Studies.

Narratives of space, time, and life.Barbara Tversky - 2004 - Mind and Language 19 (4):380–392.
The mind constructs narratives from what would otherwise be chaos. Narratives viewed minimally—at least two temporally ordered events—are revealed in the way people talk about space and time. Narratives replete with a voice, causality, and emotion are reflected in the stories people tell about their own lives, stories that, as acknowledged by their tellers, distort the details around 60% of the time, but, according to their tellers, distort the 'truth' far less often.

    Systematicity and Natural Language Syntax.Barbara C. Scholz - 2007 - Croatian Journal of Philosophy 7 (3):375-402.
A lengthy debate in the philosophy of the cognitive sciences has turned on whether the phenomenon known as ‘systematicity’ of language and thought shows that connectionist explanatory aspirations are misguided. We investigate the issue of just which phenomenon ‘systematicity’ is supposed to be. The much-rehearsed examples always suggest that being systematic has something to do with ways in which some parts of expressions in natural languages (and, more conjecturally, some parts of thoughts) can be substituted for others without altering well-formedness. (...)

WOMEN AS FATHERS:: Motherhood and Child Care Under a Modified Patriarchy.Barbara Katz Rothman - 1989 - Gender and Society 3 (1):89-104.
Although the modern American kinship system is nominally a bilateral system, the very definition of kin ties is based on the principles of patriarchy. Women do not gain their rights to their children in this society as mothers, but as father-equivalents, sources of genetic material. In child rearing as in childbearing, women may take on the role of fathers to their children, substituting poorer women to do the traditional mothering work. The resultant recasting of the classic Oedipal drama in terms (...)

Technology assessment (TA) is – for several reasons – not detachable from ethical questions. The development of institutions and concepts for TA, especially in the USA and Western Europe, has been marked by an increasing tendency to focus evaluative and normative questions. In the following paper, we point out, in as far as the common notions of TA are implicitly normative, why reflection upon conceptual options of TA inevitably leads to ethical questions, and that the key question of participation necessarily (...)

    Reasonable Believing.Barbara Winters - 1980 - Dialectica 34 (1):3-16.
SummaryThe paper examines the conditions someone's believing must satisfy in order to be reasonable and argues that an important necessary condition concerns the nature of the origin and sustain‐ment of the belief. This requirement cannot be captured by conditions on logical relations among the believed propositions, but instead concerns the psychological process of reasoning, concluding, or basing one belief on another. The implications of this result for traditional epistemology are examined, and it is concluded that the most important issues are (...)

    L’hommage de Stephen Jay Gould à l’évolutionnisme de Nietzsche.Barbara Stiegler - 2015 - Dialogue 54 (3):409-453.

We are within nature and culture, conditioned simultaneously by genes and meanings. This form of our self-understanding is the result of fundamental modifications that happened in modern philosophical anthropology and of the impact of the natural Science. In modern philosophy three types of approaches to the human situation were constituted at different times: the idealist, the naturalist, and the culturalist, and the problem of whether humanity is natural (biological) or cultural has begun to take precedence over the issue of human (...)
