Physical Demands in Elite Futsal Referees During Spanish Futsal Cup.Carlos Serrano, Javier Sánchez-Sánchez, Jose Luis Felipe, Enrique Hernando, Leonor Gallardo & Jorge Garcia-Unanue - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
In futsal there are two referees on the playing court and their capacity to respond to physical and physiological demands imposed during the game is essential for the success. The futsal characteristics such as size pitch, referees position and rules of games or type of league could impose specific physical efforts probably. The aim of this study were to analyze the physical demands of eight elite referees from seven matches of Spanish Futsal Cup 2020. The physical activity of each referee (...)

    A Generalization of Monadic n-Valued Łukasiewicz Algebras.Carlos Gallardo & Alicia Ziliani - 2021 - Studia Logica 110 (2):457-478.
\ of monadic m-generalized Łukasiewicz algebras of order n -algebras), namely a generalization of monadic n-valued Łukasiewicz algebras. In this article, we determine the congruences and we characterized the subdirectly irreducible \-algebras. From this last result we proved that \ is a discriminator variety and as a consequence we characterized the principal congruences. In the last part of this paper we find an immersion of these algebras in a functional algebra and we proved that in the finite case they are (...)

A Note on 3×3-valued Łukasiewicz Algebras with Negation.Carlos Gallardo & Alicia Ziliani - 2021 - Bulletin of the Section of Logic 50 (3):289-298.
In 2004, C. Sanza, with the purpose of legitimizing the study of \-valued Łukasiewicz algebras with negation -algebras) introduced \-valued Łukasiewicz algebras with negation. Despite the various results obtained about \-algebras, the structure of the free algebras for this variety has not been determined yet. She only obtained a bound for their cardinal number with a finite number of free generators. In this note we describe the structure of the free finitely generated \-algebras and we determine a formula to calculate (...)

    HIV Disease Progression: Overexpression of the Ectoenzyme CD38 as a Contributory Factor?Juan C. Rodríguez-Alba, Amayrani Abrego-Peredo, Carlos Gallardo-Hernández, Jocelyn Pérez-Lara, Wendolaine Santiago-Cruz, Wei Jiang & Enrique Espinosa - 2019 - Bioessays 41 (1):1800128.
Despite abundant evidence associating CD38 overexpression and CD4 T cell depletion in HIV infection, no causal relation has been investigated. To address this issue, a series of mechanisms are proposed, supported by evidence from different fields, by which CD38 overexpression can facilitate CD4 T cell depletion in HIV infection. According to this model, increased catalytic activity of CD38 may reduce CD4 T cells’ cytoplasmic nicotin‐amide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), leading to a chronic Warburg effect. This will reduce mitochondrial function. Simultaneously, CD38's (...)

    Carnavalização no teatro ibérico barroco.Carlos Gontijo Rosa - 2019 - Bakhtiniana 14 (3):101-135.

The Presence of the Body in Digital Education: A Phenomenological Approach to Embodied Experience.Carlos Willatt & Luis Manuel Flores - 2021 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 41 (1):21-37.
In a context of pervasive digitalization of the social world, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the field of education has undergone major changes with the development of digital practices and settings. However, the physical presence of the subjects and the body remain something primordial and irreplaceable in traditional educational processes. Thus, it is often assumed that virtuality is opposed to the corporeal reality of the subjects involved in teaching, learning and studying. In this paper we aim to critically (...)

The value of and in novel ecosystem.Carlos Gray Santana - 2022 - Biology and Philosophy 37 (2):1-18.
The very idea of novel ecosystems has been controversial in ecology. Critics have complained about its imprecision, and that it illicitly smuggles problematic ethical and political values into the science. By labelling a human-modified system a ‘novel ecosystem,‘ they worry, we give policymakers a “license to trash nature.“ The critics are right to be suspicious. I show that proponents of the novel ecosystem concept have been unable to make it both value-free and precise enough to allow for applied use. Also, the (...)

The (...)

Hybrid Logics: Characterization, Interpolation and Complexity.Carlos Areces, Patrick Blackburn & Maarten Marx - 2001 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 66 (3):977-1010.
Hybrid languages are expansions of propositional modal languages which can refer to worlds. The use of strong hybrid languages dates back to at least [Pri67], but recent work has focussed on a more constrained system called $\mathscr{H}$. We show in detail that $\mathscr{H}$ is modally natural. We begin by studying its expressivity, and provide model theoretic characterizations and a syntactic characterization. The key result to emerge is that $\mathscr{H}$ corresponds to the fragment of first-order logic which is invariant for generated (...)

Many experts have warned that environmental degradation is increasing the likelihood of future pandemics like COVID-19, as habitat loss and poaching increase close contact between wildlife and people. This fact has been framed as a reason to increase wildlife conservation efforts. We have many good reasons to step up conservation efforts, but arguments for doing so on the basis of pandemic prevention are rhetorically, ethically, and empricially flawed.

Philosophical Religions From Plato to Spinoza: Reason, Religion, and Autonomy.Carlos Fraenkel - 2012 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Many pagan, Jewish, Christian and Muslim philosophers from Antiquity to the Enlightenment made no meaningful distinction between philosophy and religion. Instead they advocated a philosophical religion, arguing that God is Reason and that the historical forms of a religious tradition serve as philosophy's handmaid to promote the life of reason among non-philosophers. Carlos Fraenkel provides the first account of this concept and traces its history back to Plato. He shows how Jews and Christians appropriated it in Antiquity, follows it (...)

This paper explores and expands upon Jorge Gracia's reasons for the apparent lack of Hispanics in US philosophy. The point is to explain the underrepresentation of Hispanics in philosophy, with a focus on a specific subgroup of Hispanics, namely, "homegrown" US Hispanics. This group wasentirely missing from the "established" ranks in Gracia's census. I propose a phenomenological explanation for this lack, rooted in my experience as ahomegrown US Hispanic. This experience gives rise to a sense of identity described as "post-immigrant." (...)

Crossmodal effect of music and odor pleasantness on olfactory quality perception.Carlos Velasco, Diana Balboa, Fernando Marmolejo-Ramos & Charles Spence - 2014 - Frontiers in Psychology 5:111350.
Previous research has demonstrated that ratings of the perceived pleasantness and quality of odors can be modulated by auditory stimuli presented at around the same time. Here, we extend these results by assessing whether the hedonic congruence between odor and sound stimuli can modulate the perception of odor intensity, pleasantness, and quality in untrained participants. Unexpectedly, our results reveal that broadband white noise, which was rated as unpleasant in a follow-up experiment, actually had a more pronounced effect on participants’ odor (...)

IN THE DISCUSSION on education in the Republic, Socrates lays down the principles which those who speak about the gods must follow if they want to avoid the errors of traditional mythology. The first typos of this rational theology is this: "God is the cause, not of all things, but only of the good." For "God, being good, cannot be responsible for everything happening in our life, as is commonly believed, but only for a small part. For we have a (...)

This chapter will be a brief survey of the concepts from general philosophy of science for those interested in cognitive science. It covers several major topics in the philosophy of science: scientific explanation and underdetermination, reductionism and levels of nature, and scientific realism. We will discuss the goals of science, the methods of science, and the most plausible interpretations of science. To demonstrate the importance of these topics, the chapter includes cases in which confusion over these issues has led scientists (...)

Through 37 original papers, renowned scholars from many different countries, as well as a number of young and promising researchers, write the history of the philosophical problems of freedom and determinism since its origins in pre-socratic philosophy up to the seventeenth century. Multi-Task Learning tries to improve the learning process of different tasks by solving them simultaneously. A popular Multi-Task Learning formulation for SVM is to combine common and task-specific parts. Other approaches rely on using a Graph Laplacian regularizer. Here we propose a combination of these two approaches that can be applied to L1, L2 and LS-SVMs. We also propose an algorithm to iteratively learn the graph adjacency matrix used in the Laplacian regularization. We test our proposal with synthetic and real (...)

Objective Beauty and Subjective Dissent in Leibniz’s Aesthetics.Carlos Portales - 2018 - Estetika: The European Journal of Aesthetics 55 (1):67-88.
According to the classical view, beauty is grounded on the universe’s objective harmony, defined by the formula of unity in variety. Concurrently, nature’s beauty is univocal and independent of subjective judgement. In this paper I will argue that, although Leibniz’s view coincides with this formula, his philosophy offers an explanation for subjective dissent in aesthetic judgements about nature. I will show that the acceptance of divergences on aesthetic value are the result of a conception of harmony that includes qualitative variety (...)
