Abstract words processing induces parasympathetic activation: A thermal imaging study.Melania Paoletti, Chiara Fini, Chiara Filippini, Giovanna M. Massari, Emilia D’Abundo, Arcangelo Merla, Francesca Bellagamba & Anna M. Borghi - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
words compose a significant part of speech. Despite this, learning them is complicated. Abstract concepts collect more heterogeneous exemplars and are more detached from sensory modalities than concrete concepts. Recent views propose that, because of their complexity, other people are pivotal for abstract concepts’ acquisition and use, e.g., to explain their meaning. We tested this hypothesis using a combined behavioral and thermal imaging paradigm. Twenty-one Italian children determined whether acoustic stimuli were or not correct Italian words. Concrete terms yielded faster (...)

The Separation Wall and the right to healthcare.Melania Borgo & Mario Picozzi - 2016 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 19 (4):523-529.
Nowadays, the concepts of soldier and war have changed due to terrorism and the war on terrorism. According to the literature, to prevent terrorism, it is possible to use more violence, but how can we grant the safety of many versus the dignity of a few? In Israel, in order to protect civilians against possible terrorist attacks, Palestinian ambulances that would reach the Israeli hospitals must be quickly controlled. However, many times, at the checkpoint, patients have to wait for an (...)

Classification JEL : B11.

Connecting sites and images: Archeology as controversial knowledge in modern İzmir.Melania Savino - 2017 - History of Science 55 (3):364-382.
In Turkey, the period after the establishment of the Republic saw archeological representations play an active role in defining the ancient past and producing new disciplinary knowledge. Visual practices emerged as important sites for the formation of a new conception of the ancient past in the larger context of the political and cultural discourse over the modernization of the country. Based on museum guidebooks, official publications, and archival documents, this paper focuses on the İzmir region after the establishment of the (...)

Filozof i psychoanalityk.

Causes as proximate events: Thomas Brown and the Positivist interpretation of Hume on causality.Cristina Paoletti - 2011 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 42 (1):37-44.
A neglected episode in the intellectual history of the Scottish Enlightenment, Thomas Brown’s philosophy has been recently reassessed and reconnected with the emergence of the Positivist interpretation of David Hume. In fact, aiming to defend Hume’s philosophy from the common charges of atheism and scepticism, Brown popularised an interpretation of Humean texts which was later to become the standard view on Hume. In this essay, I aim to identify Brown’s historical sources and connect his reading of Hume with the medical (...)

Rule and Norm describe the distinctive ways in which power relates with human life either in Ancient Regime or in Modernity as Foucault described it. In its Foucauldian aception biopolitics is the management of Human being as a species. More recent account by Roberto Esposito makes of it a biologization of politics. This article discusses the strengths on Foucault’s approach to biopolitics.

The discourse that defines disability as a personal tragedy is discussed in relation with Adrianne Rich´s concept of compulsory heterosexuality, and purports the existence of a “disability dispositive” .The consequences of this normative oppression for people with disabilities are a form of failed citizenship.

  19. Aquinas and the Varieties of Dependence.Paolini Paoletti Michele - forthcoming - Dialectica.
I wish to prove in this article that Thomas Aquinas was a metaontological pluralist, i.e., that he held that there are many, non-equivalent and irreducible dependence relations in the universe. In this respect, I shall focus on Aquinas' doctrine of the four causes and on the dependence relationships between matter and form in material substances. Subsequently, I shall also reconstruct Aquinas' doctrines by explicitly appealing to metaontological pluralism. I shall explore two routes towards Aquinas' metaontological pluralism: one based on cases (...)

Recombinant DNA technology has been used to engineer vaccinia virus genetically into a eukaryotic expression vector. An exciting outcome of these gene‐splicing techniques is that after the insertion of one or more genes which encode the information for antigens responsible for conferring immunity toward an infectious disease, vaccinia can be adapted for the development of live recombinant vaccines. This review discusses recombinant vaccinia design and the feasibility of using these vaccines for disease protection.

Ellipses and ovals: two curves so close and so far.Giuseppe Conti, Raffaella Paoletti & Alberto Trotta - 2021 - Science and Philosophy 9 (1):133-159.
In this work we will deal with ellipses and ovals, comparing them both from the geometric point of view and from the one of applications. There is a notable similarity between these curves so often it’s not possible to recognize which of the two figures is, unless we consider other elements to distinguish them. We will show the presence of both curves in architectural works and in treatises, motivating their use, when it’s possible, with geometric and technological considerations.

I examine and discuss in this paper Orilia’s theory of external, non-symmetrical relations, that is based on ontological roles (O-Roles). I explore several attempts to interpret O-Roles from an ontological viewpoint and I reject them because of two problems concerning the status of asymmetrical relations (to be distinguished from non-symmetrical relations simpliciter) and of exemplification as an external, non-symmetrical relation. Finally, following Heil’s and Lowe’s characterization of modes as particular properties that ontologically depend on their “bearers”, I introduce relational modes (...)

I defend the thesis that, if there are substances, substance causation (i.e., causation by substances) is the only sort of causation in the universe – or the only fundamental sort. Subsequently, I develop an account of substance causation that is partly grounded on a peculiar interpretation of absolute change (i.e., of entities' coming and ceasing to be) and qualitative change, on some ontological assumptions about modes (i.e., individual properties that ontologically depend on their bearers) and powers. Finally, I reply to (...)

In the second section, after having provided a characterization of conjunctive properties, I develop an argument based on the principle of ontological parsimony: if we accept that there are conjunctive properties in the universe then, ceteris paribus, our ontology turns out to be less ontologically parsimonious than if we reject them. In Section 2 I introduce some metaphysical assumptions about powers. In Section 3 I show how powers can ground single-case probabilities and frequency-probabilities in a deterministic setting. Later on, in Section (...)

    From Falsemakers to Negative Properties.Michele Paolini Paoletti - 2016 - Theoria 83 (1):53-77.
I shall argue in this article that, if we need to admit of negative facts in our ontology as falsemakers of false propositions, then it is plausible to accept that there are also negative properties conceived of as modes. After having briefly recalled the falsemaker argument, I shall explore five different alternative interpretations of negative facts and I shall demonstrate that each alternative – except for the one involving negative properties – is affected by some problems. Later on, I shall (...)
