  23. The Will to Believe: And Other Essays in Popular Philosophy.William James - 2014 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
For this 1897 publication, the American philosopher William James brought together ten essays, some of which were originally talks given to Ivy League societies. Accessible to a broader audience, these non-technical essays illustrate the author's pragmatic approach to belief and morality, arguing for faith and action in spite of uncertainty. James thought his audiences suffered 'paralysis of their native capacity for faith' while awaiting scientific grounds for belief. His response consisted in an attitude of 'radical empiricism', which deals practically rather (...)

Just Babies: The Origins of Good and Evil.Paul Bloom - 2013 - Crown.
A leading cognitive scientist argues that a deep sense of good and evil is bred in the bone. From John Locke to Sigmund Freud, philosophers and psychologists have long believed that we begin life as blank moral slates. Many of us take for granted that babies are born selfish and that it is the role of society—and especially parents—to transform them from little sociopaths into civilized beings. In Just Babies, Paul Bloom argues that humans are in fact hardwired with a (...)

    Mindfulness in Higher Education.Mirabai Bush - 2011 - Contemporary Buddhism 12 (1):183--197.
This paper explores the introduction of mindfulness into courses in higher education. Some of these courses are taught by Buddhist scholars; others are taught by scholars within other disciplines who themselves have a meditation practice. Those scholars included here represent a much larger number in diverse settings, including state universities, liberal arts colleges, Ivy League institutions, and historically black colleges. They teach in almost every discipline, including architecture, poetry, chemistry, economics, and law. The courses discussed in this paper are taught (...)

Culture as Common Sense: Perceived Consensus Vs. Personal Beliefs as Mechanisms of Cultural Influence.Tam Kim-Pong, Morris Michael, Lee Sau-lai, Lau Ivy Yee-Man, Chiu Chi-yue & Zou Xi - unknown
We propose that culture affects people through their perceptions of what is consensually believed. Whereas past research has examined whether cultural differences in social judgment are mediated by differences in individuals’ personal values and beliefs, we investigate whether they are mediated by differences in individuals’ perceptions of the views of people around them. We propose that individuals who perceive that traditional views are culturally consensual (e.g., Chinese participants who believe that most of their fellows hold collectivistic values) will themselves behave (...)

Ethical Thought in Public Relations History: Seeking a Relevant Perspective.Genevieve McBride - 1989 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 4 (1):5 – 20.
A serious retardant to development of a specifically public relations (PR) ethical philosophy is the tendency to retain a commitment uniquely journalistic? objectivity. Ivy Lee and Edward Bernays offered two ethical options or imperatives, based on objectivity or on advocacy. Public relations must accept a commitment to the ethics of persuasion in order to reduce a crippling inferiority complex and advance understanding of the profession by its practitioners as well as the public.

The Ethical Implications of Using Artificial Intelligence in Auditing.Ivy Munoko, Helen L. Brown-Liburd & Miklos Vasarhelyi - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-26.
Accounting firms are reporting the use of Artificial Intelligence in their auditing and advisory functions, citing benefits such as time savings, faster data analysis, increased levels of accuracy, more in-depth insight into business processes, and enhanced client service. AI, an emerging technology that aims to mimic the cognitive skills and judgment of humans, promises competitive advantages to the adopter. As a result, all the Big 4 firms are reporting its use and their plans to continue with this innovation in areas (...)

:Many teaching hospitals in the United States were founded on philanthropic principles and aimed to aid the urban poor and underserved. However, as times have changed, there has been a divide created between the urban poor and teaching hospitals. There is a plethora of reasons why this is the case. This paper will specifically focus on the histories of ten hospitals and medical schools and the effect that white flight, segregation, elitism, and marginalization had on healthcare institutions all over the (...)

What's Wrong with Chinese Journalists? Addressing Journalistic Ethics in China Through a Case Study of the Beijing Youth Daily.Shixin Ivy Zhang - 2009 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 24 (2-3):173 – 188.
This paper uses Beijing Youth Daily , the second biggest local newspaper in Beijing, as a case study to examine Chinese news people's perceptions of their professional roles and unethical practices. The author argues that Chinese journalistic professionalism has developed. Journalists see their most fundamental role as that of disseminator. Their concepts of professional roles and virtues are surprisingly similar to those held by journalists in liberal democratic countries. However, Chinese journalists' partial representation of the party/state and their tolerance towards (...)

Anthropology has gained in popularity, penetrating the ivy walls of literature departments, philosophical debates, historical texts. It is for this reason that it is useful to reflect on what has happened in this funny discipline, peddling otherness and debating human nature. Culture has become a rallying point for a number of disciplines and the joining of a historical perspective seems to be a giant step forward in the emergence of a more powerful human science. It is not just academics that (...)

    Critical Multiculturalism.Chicago Cultural Studies Group - 1992 - Critical Inquiry 18 (3):530.
We would like to open some questions here about the institutional and cultural conditions of anything that might be called cultural studies or multiculturalism. By introducing cultural studies and multiculturalism many intellectuals aim at a more democratic culture. We share this aim. In this essay, however, we would like to argue that the projects of cultural studies and multiculturalism require: a more international model of cultural studies than the dominant Anglo-American versions; renewed attention to the institutional environments of cultural studies; (...)

The results of a study of a sample of 171 Year 2 children from five randomly selected primary schools within one Local Education Authority are presented. Pupils’ scores on Mathematics 7, a standardised mathematics test for 7 year‐olds are compared to the mathematics SAT score elicited by them in the previous half‐term. Results show (...)

The amount of criticism heaped upon persuadent has obscured consideration of the meaning of picta; for it is this word which carries the weight of the line. Tracing the sequence of thought in the passage will show where the emphasis lies. Recent excavations in Macedonia have provided an analogy to the pillaging of the Palace at Persepolis. In plundered tombs at Aiani the excavators found a number of small gold discs with impressed rosettes and of gilded silver ivy leaves; at Katerini some thirty-five gold discs with impressed rosettes, a gold double pin, a gold ring from a sword-hilt, a bit of a gilded pectoral, gilded silver fittings once attached to a leather cuirass, many buttons and other fragments; and at Palatitsia (...)

During the recent discussions concerning the problem of the criterion of truth, some comrades have said: In real life we use a great many criteria to distinguish between true and false, such as the criterion for distinguishing between the fragrant flowers and the poison ivy [i.e., ideologically correct and incorrect], the criterion for distinguishing what is revolutionary from what is counterrevolutionary, the criterion for determining successors to manage the proletarian revolution, etc. Although these criteria are derived from practice, in themselves (...)

Ontotropology: Disfiguration and Unreadability in James Joyce's Ulysses.Nicola Ivy Spunt - 2011 - Oxford Literary Review 33 (1):1-20.
This paper explores how figures of temporality, disfiguration and orgasm in the ‘Nausicaa’ episode of Joyce's Ulysses come together to allegorise unreadability. I argue that the text's invocation of a ‘contretemps’ to figure a scene of indigestion elicits a temporality of shock, producing a counternarrative that thwarts the ostensible readability it purports. Moreover, the principles of ideality and transparency commonly associated with the sentimental mode are countervailed by the episode's transgressive rhetorical shocks: a public display of onanistic activity and the (...)
