    Remarks on Gregory's" Actually" Operator.Blackburn Patrick & Marx Maarten - 2002 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 31 (3):281-288.
In this note we show that the classical modal technology of Sahlqvist formulas gives quick proofs of the completeness theorems in [8] : 57-78, 2001) and vastly generalizes them. Moreover, as a corollary, interpolation theorems for the logics considered in [8] are obtained. We then compare Gregory's modal language enriched with an "actually" operator with the work of Arthur Prior now known under the name of hybrid logic. This analysis relates the "actually" axioms to standard hybrid axioms, yields the decidability (...)

Is "The Theory of History" (1914) Collingwood's First Essay on the Philosophy of History?James Patrick - 1990 - History and Theory 29 (4):1.
The J. A. Smith collection at Magdalen College, Oxford, contains an unsigned carbon copy, dated 1914, titled "The Theory of History." The manuscript, if Collingwood's, is his earliest essay on the philosophy of history. That "The Theory of History" may be Collingwood's is established by considerations of chronology, geography, and the appearance of certain intellectual interests mirrored in his other writing of the period 1913 to 1920. Present in the manuscript also are: the principles of the ideality of history, or (...)

Beyond Coalitions of the Willing: Assessing U.S. Multilateralism.Stewart Patrick - 2003 - Ethics and International Affairs 17 (1):37-54.
This article suggests that purely nationalist policies, whether pursued through unilateral or multilateral means, will become increasingly untenable and illegitimate as world politics becomes institutionalized and as humanity becomes integrated, albeit slowly, into a single cosmopolitan community.

Fisi Vs. Journeys Into St. Patrick's Purgatory. Irish Psychanodias and Somanodias.Corin Braga - 2013 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 12 (36):180-227.
Early medieval Irish literature presents several types of voyages into the afterworld: echtrai (various adventures into Mag Mell), immrama (sea travels to the enchanted islands of the Ocean), fisi (ecstatic revelations of Christian eschatology), journeys into Saint Patrick’s Purgatory. In this paper, we seek to contrast the fisi and the descents into the cave of Saint Patrick. From a morphological point of view, both have a great deal of topoï in common, which describe the structure of the Christian (...)

Curing Cancer? Patrick Lee's Path to the Reovirus Treatment.Paul Thagard - 2002 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 16 (1):79 – 93.
This article provides a historical, philosophical, and psychological analysis of the recent discovery that reoviruses are oncolytic, capable of infecting and destroying many kinds of cancer cells. After describing Patrick Lee's very indirect path to this discovery, I discuss the implications of this case for understanding the nature of scientific discovery, including the economy of research, anomaly recognition, hypothesis formation, and the role of emotion in scientific thinking. Lee's discoveries involved a combination of serendipity, abductive and deductive inference, and (...)

    Patrick Riley’s Leibniz.David Lay Williams - 2011 - The Leibniz Review 21:1-8.
This essay clarifies Patrick Riley’s account of G. W. Leibniz by placing Leibniz’s moral and political doctrines in historical perspective. By understanding Leibniz’s practical philosophy as a solution to the same problems confronted by Thomas Hobbes, one can appreciate the originality and appeal of Riley’s Leibniz — with its emphasis on benevolence and Platonic ideas. By drawing attention to Leibniz’s practical works, Riley has resurrected an important voice in the history of political thought that had been long neglected. The (...)

The Rogue as an Artist in Patrick deWitt’s "The Sisters Brothers".Hilde Staels - 2019 - Text Matters - a Journal of Literature, Theory and Culture 9 (9):153-166.
This article explores Eli Sisters as a reinvigorated rogue who finds his artistic calling in Patrick deWitt’s The Sisters Brothers, published in 2011. With the help of insights from narratology and genre theory, the article provides a textual analysis of Eli’s discourse, perspective and behaviour. Eli casts a critical light on the senseless violence, unbridled greed, ecological devastation, and hyper-masculinity inherent to America’s Frontier myth. As a reinvigorated rogue, he raises questions about what it means to be human and (...)

The Relation of Phenomenology and Thomistic Metaphysics to Religion: A Study of Patrick Masterson’s Approaching God: Between Phenomenology and Theology.Robert Sokolowski - 2014 - Review of Metaphysics 67 (3):603-626.
The first part of this essay presents Patrick Masterson’s exposition of the phenomenology of religion developed by Jean-Luc Marion, and his exposition of the Thomistic philosophy of religion. Masterson argues that phenomenology can be helpful as an analysis of faith and religious experience, but it remains within subjective immanence. It needs to be complemented by a metaphysical analysis that deals with causation and explanation, as Thomism does. The essay then makes three points: first, that phenomenology need not be limited (...)

The Shameless Performativity of Camp in Patrick White’s the Twyborn Affair.Jackson Moore - 2018 - Angelaki 23 (1):88-101.
Camp might be said to be a queer object to the extent that it resists any attempt to define it in language. This essay reads Patrick White’s The Twyborn Affair as a demonstration of the more performative and affective understanding of camp that is needed to overcome the conceptual impossibility of camp’s existence in language alone. This essay reconceptualizes camp as a performative and affective social phenomenon by reading the protagonist of White’s text as an exemplary figure who resists (...)

My main reaction to MCGivern’s paper was one of dialectical puzzlement. Block argues that, Macro Non-Reduction: [all] macro properties are irreducible to the micro properties on which they supervene..

The paper focuses on the role of Kant’s refutation of materialism in his understanding of the Enlightenment, meant to be the necessary condition that allows human beings to express their proper dignity, i.e. to cultivate the urge for and the vocation of free thought. Sketching the main moments of the German struggle against the threat of materialism, the paper places Kant’s refutation within this tradition, and reconstructs the steps of his critique from the very beginning of his reflection – still (...)
