  5. Looking Beneath the Surface: Medical Ethics From Islamic and Western Perspectives.Hendrik M. Vroom, Petra Verdonk, Marzouk Aulad Abdellah & Martina C. Cornel (eds.) - 2013 - Editions Rodopi.
Looking Beneath the Surface explores Arab-Islamic and Western perspectives on medical ethical issues: genetic research and treatment, abortion, organ donation, and palliative sedation and euthanasia. The contributions in this volume discuss the state of the art, the role of laws, counseling, and spiritual counseling in the decision-making process. The different approaches to the ethical issues, ways of moral reasoning, become clear in these contributions, especially the role of tradition for Islam and the importance of autonomy for the West. Beneath the (...)

Cornel West at NABSE.Cornel West - unknown
On November 18, 1994, academic, activist, and philosopher Cornel West addressed the National Alliance of Black School Educators at a conference in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Dr. West’s speech, captured in this video recording, focuses on the experience of African Americans in America, a culture that, according to West, is steeped in the “pernicious and vicious” influence of white supremacy. West argues that 1994 is one of the “more frightening and terrifying moments” in the history (...)

Prophetic Pragmatism and the Practices of Freedom: On Cornel West's Foucauldian Methodology.Brad Elliott Stone - 2011 - Foucault Studies 11:92-105.
This essay explores the Foucauldian influence on Cornel West’s prophetic pragmatism. Although West argues that Foucauldian methods are insufficient to deliver a philosophy of liberation, I argue that there is nothing in Foucault that would prohibit West from such a goal, even though a philosophy of liberation was not one of Foucault’s goals. Fortunately, one can understand West’s own project of liberation in terms of “practices of freedom,” allowing one to describe West’s philosophical project in strict Foucauldian terms.

Religion in the Public Square?: A Critical Response to Cornel West.J. Caleb Clanton - 2008 - Philosophy in the Contemporary World 15 (1):82-93.
This paper examines Cornel West’s attempt to offer an alternative to the dominant liberal view concerning the proper role of religion in the democratic public square. Whereas mainstream liberals seek strategies to keep religion and public life separate, West seeks to dissolve the apparent tension between religion and democratic citizenship by reconstructing religion pragmatically such that it can be rendered compatible with democracy. I argue that West’s proposal fails to be a viable alternative precisely because the “prophetic pragmatism” underwriting (...)

  10. Cornel West & Philosophy: The Quest for Social Justice.Clarence Sholé Johnson - 2003 - Routledge.
Cornel West's reputation as a public and celebrity intellectual has overshadowed his important contributions to philosophy. Professor Clarence Shole Johnson provides a rectification of this situation in this benchmark, thought-provoking book. After a brief biographical sketch, Johnson leads us through a comprehensive examination of West's philosophy from his conceptions of pragmatism, existentialism, Marxism, and Prophetic Christianity to his persuasive writings on black-Jewish relations, affirmative action, and the role of black intellectuals. Special focus is given to West's writings on ethics (...)

    On the Frank Speech of Cornel West’s Prophetic Witness.Marc Lombardo - 2007 - Contemporary Pragmatism 4 (1):73-89.
This article looks at the work of Cornel West with respect to his description of the social function played by the prophetic witness. West's account of the prophet's unique brand of truth-telling is introduced by first examining Michel Foucault's description of the capacity of parrhesia, or frank speech, in antiquity. The frank speech of the prophetic witness as described by West is a more pertinent model of truth-telling for the present day's social, political, and philosophical concerns.

    A Critique of Cornel West’s Christo-Marxian Prescription for Social Justice.Clarence Sholé Johnson - 2000 - Social Philosophy Today 16:95-112.
This essay examines Cornel West's position that social justice for the socially marginalized, especially African Americans, can only be obtained through, among other things, a synthesis of Marxian critique of capitalistic culture and hegemony, and Black prophetic theological outlook. I bring out certain limitations in West's position, in particular, what I construe as his tendency to reduce all forms of oppression to the economic. Furthermore, even as I agree with West that capitalism needs to be examined, I argue, on (...)

    A Prophetic Church in a Post-Constantinian Age: The Implicit Theology of Cornel West.Jeffrey Stout - 2007 - Contemporary Pragmatism 4 (1):39-45.
This article concerns central theological commitments in Cornel West's prophetic social criticism. West is best interpreted as someone proposing a politics of charism, in which human arrangements need constantly to make room for and conform themselves to the divine gifts of inspired speech, music, knowledge, and love. The church, for West, is a fallible, earthen vessel into which God's charismatic treasures are poured. The church's prophetic mission must receive prophetic criticism; it should disconnect itself from empire, capital, racism, sexism, (...)

Cornel West, John Dewey, and the Tragicomic Undercurrents of Deweyan Creative Democracy.Dwayne A. Tunstall - 2008 - Contemporary Pragmatism 5 (2):109-129.
Despite differences between Cornel West's prophetic pragmatism and Dewey's pragmatism, they both conceive of “creative democracy” as an ethico-religious ideal. Accordingly, this article examines how Deweyan creative democracy is an ethico-religious ideal, in the sense of being a religious humanist ideal. This article concludes with an explanation of how a contemporary Deweyan democrat living in the United States cannot help but recognize the tragicomic undercurrents of creative democracy.

Making Niagara a Cataract: Cornel West, Greatness, and the Music of Ideas.Paul C. Taylor - 2007 - Contemporary Pragmatism 4 (1):91-115.
There is an odd duality in Cornel West's work. He is a generous thinker and voracious interlocutor, willing to learn from anyone on a sincere quest for insight. But he is also he is an unapologetic admirer of greatness, as stingy with ascriptions of genius as he is lavish with praise for the select few who qualify. "Making Niagara a Cataract" reflects on this duality. I try to explain what motivates West's commitment to the importance of greatness, and how (...)

    On Cornel West and Pragmatism.Eddie S. Glaude - 2007 - Contemporary Pragmatism 4 (1):1-5.
This introduction to a special issue of Contemporary Pragmatism about Cornel West argues that he remains, despite his recent self-descriptions, a critical voice within the tradition of pragmatism. West's preoccupation with the tragicomic dimensions of our lives point to resources within the philosophies of pragmatism that have been underdeveloped or simply ignored.

This study exposes the democratic theories located within the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cornel West. Special attention is given to their different conceptions of human psychology, Christian identities, and appreciation of Marxist social analysis. A guiding assumption of this work is that the democratic philosophies of King and West provides a bridge between African American theological and philosophical traditions. ;This study presents a close examination of King's and West's corpus, including their public addresses and artistic productions. Cornel West and the Tragedy at the Heart of North American Pragmatism: A Retrospective Look at The American Evasion of Philosophy.Louis A. Ruprecht Jr - 2017 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 38 (2-3):179.
The fundamental argument of this book is that the evasion of epistemology-centered philosophy—from Emerson to Rorty—results in a conception of philosophy as a form of cultural criticism in which the meaning of America is put forward by intellectuals in response to distinct social and cultural crises. In this sense, American Pragmatism is less a philosophical tradition putting forward solutions to perennial problems in the Western philosophical conversation initiated by Plato and more a continuous cultural commentary or set of interpretations that (...)

Translating Democracy or Democratic Acts of Translation: On Cornel West’s Democracy Matters.Eduardo Mendieta - 2007 - Contemporary Pragmatism 4 (1):25-37.
Focusing on West's recent work Democracy Matters, this essay argues that West's work has been guided by three major acts of translation. First, he has sought to translate the memory of suffering and the history of struggle into the foundations for democratic maturity. Second, combining Socratic questioning, prophetic practice and dark hope, West translates suspicion, action and hope into an ethos of collective education, which he calls democratic paideia. Finally, West's work has sought to translate the aesthetic, and in particular (...)
