The erosion of the three interlocking dimensions of nature, society and self is the consequence of what Felix Guattari referred to as integrated world capitalism (IWC). In South Africa the erosion of nature, society and self is also the consequence of centuries of colonialism and decades of apartheid. In this paper I wish to explore how the African philosophy of ubuntu (humanness), which appears to be anthropocentric, might be invoked to contribute to the healing of the three ecologies—how healing of (...) the social might transversally effect healing of nature and the self. My theoretical exploration has relevance to education in South Africa, given that a mandate of national curriculum policy is that indigenous knowledge systems form part of the discursive terrains of all school learning areas/subjects. This article explores the influence of Spinozism on the deep ecology movement and on new materialism. It questions the stance of supporters of the DEM because their ecosophies unwittingly anthropomorphise the more-than-human-world. It suggests that instead of humanising the ‘natural’ world, morality should be naturalised, that is, that the object of human expression of ethics should be the more-than-human world. Moreover, the article discusses Deleuze’s Spinozism that informs new materialism and argues that stripping the human of its ontological privilege does (...) not deprive the human animal from its ethico-normative distinctiveness. Implications of the discussion for an education aimed at cultivating human sensibilities are explored. (shrink)

This article outlines a moral education guided by African traditional values such as ubuntu and ukama. It argues that ubuntu is not by definition speciesist, as some have claimed, but that it has strong ecocentric leanings, that is, if ubuntu is understood as a concrete expression of ukama. In fact, ubuntu deconstructs the anthropocentric?ecocentric distinction which has characterised and continues to characterise debates in environmental theory/philosophy. To become more fully human does not mean caring only for the self and other (...) human beings but also for the entire biophysical world. Some implications that this discussion has for moral education are explored, as well as some opportunities that post-apartheid curriculum frameworks offer for implementing a moral education guided by ubuntu. Currently, global society is delicately poised on a civilisational threshold similar to that of the feudal era. This is a time when outmoded institutions, values, and systems of thought and their associated dogmas are ripe for transcendence by more relevant systems of organization and knowledge (Davidson, 2000). The foundations of the modern era (including modern educational institutions) are under sharp scrutiny; the fragmentation of nature, society and self is evidence of the cracks in the foundations. In times of crises old (...) questions often come to the fore. For example, as environmental problems reach unprecedented levels the perennial existential question of how we should live is emerging once more. So too are educational questions such as what and how we should learn. But, times of crises also present new opportunities, create fresh imaginings and alternative meanings, metaphors and languages.In this paper I wish to appraise sustainability (and its epithets such as development) as a new discourse that emerged in the late 20th century in response to the psycho-socio-environmental crises of the time. I shall also examine the (in)capacity of disciplinary knowledge and traditional scholarship to respond to the complex and pressing problems of contemporary society. Finally, I will critically discuss the role that new modes of knowledge production, an expanded view of scholarship and alternative metaphors might play in (re)imagining the university's role in sustainability education. À l’origine juridique, le terme divise les historiens qui y voient tantôt une spécificité du xxe siècle, tantôt un hapax avec la « solution finale », tantôt un phénomène plus ancien avec le moment fondamental de la colonisation ouverte à l’idée d’extermination. Ainsi, la prudence fera préférer la notion de « massacre de masse ».L’instrumentalisation politique de la référence à l’état de guerre est un parallélisme plutôt qu’une (...) comparaison. Contexte favorable, prétexte, arrière-fond du discours génocidaire, la guerre est faux ami avec le génocide. Huis clos autophage dans une entité politique, le génocide connaît une plus grande proximité avec la guerre civile : la désignation d’ennemis intérieurs, la barrière du corps qui tombe, la « brutalisation » des sociétés favorisent la discrimination d’un ennemi qu’il faut rendre visible pour mieux le faire disparaître. La « bascule » dans le génocide révèle les mécanismes fantasmatiques du politique qui concrétisent l’éventualité destructrice de l’État. Aussi faut-il se demander si le génocide appartient en propre à une terrible modernité du xxe siècle ou à la substance de l’État. La question de la rationalité folle ou de la logique irrationnelle du génocide repose le problème du mal radical et du mal politique : dans la réinvention du politique à travers les pratiques génocidaires, l’existence et l’identité de l’État se redéfinissent hyperconflictuelles. Walter Benjamin, sans se placer sur le même plan, critiquant le monde de l’après-guerre avant d’envisager une essence démocratique, rencontre Schmitt sur la notion de souveraineté. Alors que tout les éloigne, et malgré l’hommage explicite de (...) Benjamin à la Théologie politique, l’hommage plus discret de Schmitt à Benjamin, l’impression qu’ils ne raisonnent pas avec la même définition de la souveraineté doit au moins être une hypothèse appelée à être démentie. Sur quoi véritablement se rencontrent-ils? Le diagnostic du conflit et le constat sur une époque ne sont qu’une réponse partielle et à bien des égards insatisfaisante. En s’appuyant sur les analyses de Giorgio Agamben, on partira de la rencontre fugace entre Schmitt et Benjamin pour étudier un concept qui a le rôle de pivot chez l’un et chez l’autre : l’état d’exception, concrétisé par la guerre civile mondiale chez Schmitt, par la guerre civile muée en terreur chez Benjamin. Dans le jeu des concepts, le point de rencontre focalisant deux pensées très différentes est aussi un point de divergence. L’adoption a la particularité d’activer un champ fantasmatique dont l’auteur se propose d’éclairer certains aspects. La résonance entre la situation adoptive et ce que Freud a appelé le « roman familial » en fait un lieu possible d’exacerbation des rivalités, des fantasmes de rapt, des mécanismes d’idéalisation, aussi bien au sein des familles adoptantes que dans leurs relations avec les professionnels chargés de les accompagner. L’idéalisation conjointe parents-pro-fessionnels de la situation adoptive a pour effet d’empêcher la reconnaissance de la négativité (...) présente dans toute forme de transmission. Elle peut empêcher aussi le repérage de ce que l’auteur propose d’appréhender comme une clinique de la rupture de transmission. Cette rupture a parfois comme conséquence la mise en place de clivages internes à chacun des protagonistes, clivages qui vont se redoubler et diffuser sous forme de sidération ou de conflits dans l’agencement des professionnels gravitant autour de ces situations. Ces situations complexes, bouleversant profondément chacun, nécessitent des espaces spécifiques de traitement et de réflexion pour en construire des modalités de compréhension. (shrink)

Au fil du temps, l'Europe est devenue un objet central de la philosophie politique d'Étienne Balibar. Née sur le terreau de sa réflexion sur le racisme, cette pensée s'est concentrée toujours davantage sur la construction européenne et ses impasses. En ce sens, il s'agit d'une vision marquée par la crise et, de ce fait même, guidée par le souci et l'urgence de la démocratisation de l'Union européenne ou, ce qui revient au même, de sa transformation. Les problèmes de la citoyenneté, (...) des frontières, du positionnement géopolitique, de la constitution, des choix économiques, des migrants ont ainsi aimanté l'élaboration d'un ensemble de concepts originaux pour penser ces enjeux, formant une œuvre dont l'ampleur et l'extension n'ont probablement d'autre équivalent, dans la scène philosophique contemporaine, que l'entreprise de Jürgen Habermas. Les auteures et les auteurs de cet ouvrage - juristes, philosophes, politistes, venus de France et d'ailleurs - engagent à leur tour un échange productif avec les principaux concepts et propositions d'Étienne Balibar sur l'Europe, convaincus de leur intérêt théorique intrinsèque mais également de l'horizon post-national dans lequel le politique se déploie désormais. Ainsi le secret pensé politiquement est-il lié à un nouveau partage du politique, qui crée une société restreinte liée par une communication spéciale entre destinateur, dépositaire et destinataire du secret, inaugurant à la fois une rationalité sans légitimité et une science politique nouvelle. Conversely, no research has been identified that specifically relates to the uncertain fertility, reproduction and motherhood challenges faced by young women after cancer. Therefore, there has been no opportunity to extend understanding, adequately acknowledge or effectively manage (...) the needs of young women who may face unique reproductive uncertainties after cancer. The objective of this article is to provide a descriptive review of the literature and present what is currently known about uncertainty in the context of cancer and in relation to fertility, reproduction and motherhood. This article sets out the need for an increased research focus into this aspect of cancer survivorship to minimise the unique psychosocial challenges these women often face. Raising awareness and acknowledging the significance and impact of uncertain reproductive capacity on younger women’s psychosocial health will aid cancer co-ordinators, nurses and other health professionals to formulate and deliver timely and appropriate education, management and support. La guerre civile complexifie les rapports politiques et n’est pas une régression dans la mesure où, contrairement à l’état de nature, il ne s’agit pas d’une hypothèse d’étude de nature fictionnelle : à ce titre elle est un arrêt plus qu’une rupture, une anomalie, un envers, un (...) dérèglement du modèle de l’État qui, selon Hobbes, ne s’édifie pas contre la guerre mais contre la guerre civile (les conflits perpétuels entre les États relevant d’une sorte d’état de nature des républiques). Guerre et guerre civile posent le problème d’une permanence de l’état de nature au cœur même de l’état social. Le mode de sortie de ce paradoxe peut être perçu dans la question de l’amnistie (qui consiste à « ne pas rappeler les malheurs » selon l’étymologie grecque) comme nouveau départ de l’histoire et abolition de la distance entre les ennemis. During the seventeenth century there were different ways of opposing the new mechanical philosophy and the old Aristotelian philosophy. Remarkably enough, one of this way succeeded in becoming stable beyond the moment of its formulation, one according to which Descartes would be the benchmark by which the works of other natural philosophers of the seventeenth century fall either on the side of the old or the new. I consequently examine the French debate where this representation emerges, a debate that took (...) place along with the development of a Cartesian propaganda in the 1660s and the ensuing official condemnations of the philosophy of Descartes, which was said to constitute a danger for the mystery of Eucharist. But these condemnations pronounced in the name of theology, as numerous and radical as they were, were not considered to be sufficient. They were assisted by numerous polemical works, the audience of which were learned companies of courteous honnêtes gens, and the object of which was to defend a certain way of proceeding in natural philosophy. I consequently concentrate on two correlated questions, the question of what kind of ontological entities are necessary for the establishment of a good physics, and the correlated question of what norms should be adopted in natural philosophy. I show quite systematically that the criticisms of Cartesian philosophers by the Oratorian Jean-Baptiste de La Grange, the bishop Pierre-Daniel Huet, and various Jesuits, Ignace Pardies, Antoine Rochon, Louis Le Valois, Gabriel Daniel, René Rapin, and Honoré Fabri respond to the mockeries of Gérauld de Cordemoy, Jacques Rohault, Louis de La Forge, Bernard Lamy, Nicolas Malebranche or Antoine Arnauld concerning the scholastic entities. Not only do I contrast their philosophical arguments concerning ontological entities and the norms to be respected in physics, but also their ways of defining the philosophical enterprise and its public. Emmanuel Levinas is one of the most original philosophers in the twentieth century. In this book, continuing his thought on obligation, he investigates the possibility that the word God can be understood now, at the end of the twentieth century, in a meaningful way. The thirteen essays collected in this volume offer an introduction to the wide range of Levinas's thought, addresses philosophical questions concerning politics, language and religion and the philosophies of, amongst others, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Marx and Derrida. Rik Peels has once again forcefully argued that ignorance is not equivalent to the lack or absence of knowledge. In doing so, he endeavors to refute the Standard View of Ignorance according to which they are equivalent, and to advance what he calls the “New View” according to which ignorance is equivalent (merely) to the lack or absence of true belief. I defend the Standard View against his new attempted refutation.

While a much investigated concept because of its importance in shaping human discourse, modality has still not been given an agreed understanding. Using authentic Chinese court judgments in Hong Kong, this paper aims to unravel the complexity of modality as exemplified in its usage in the legal domain. It examines formal, semantic, and functional approaches to modality, showing their weaknesses in identifying and explaining modality in legal discourse. O confucionismo existe, na vida espiritual do povo vietnamita, desde muito tempo. A parte positiva do Confucionismo pode-se dizer que é o fato de ele contribuir para o fortalecimento das relações familiares, entre os parentes, bem como nas relações sociais de um modo geral; outra parte positiva consiste em motivar as pessoas a desenvolverem o gosto pela leitura e aprendizagem. Estima-se que a ética confucionista precisa ser provocada, a fim de contribuir para a construção da sociedade nos dias atuais. Na (...) contramão dessa positividade, pode-se afirmar que o confucionismo, de maneira geral, não valoriza, na medida necessária, o papel das mulheres na sociedade; na realidade, ele as classifica como pessoas insignificantes. É digno de se observar, entretanto, que, no contexto social específico do Vietnã, as mulheres encontram um lugar próprio na sociedade. Nossa pesquisa visa mostrar exatamente essa diferente concepção do papel da mulher na socidade vietnamita. (shrink)

It is found that a coherent state of the cavity field can be generated in a micromaser with injected atoms in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower states. The dependence of the density matrix elements of the field on the number of injected atoms indicates that due to the same initial atomic coherence the emission of separately injected single atoms in the cavity is a cooperative process.

Many Chinese pianists, Lang Lang and Yun-di Li for example, received international recognition in recent years. When study the history of piano study and composing in China, it is not surprising that the history of Chinese piano music has gone through specific periods which strongly influenced compositional activities. This article is aimed to display cultural and political aspects that are behind historical period and analyses representative work in compositional style and characteristics.
