Throughout the biological and biomedical sciences there is a growing need for, prescriptive ‘minimum information’ (MI) checklists specifying the key information to include when reporting experimental results are beginning to find favor with experimentalists, analysts, publishers and funders alike. Such checklists aim to ensure that methods, data, analyses and results are described to a level sufficient to support the unambiguous interpretation, sophisticated search, reanalysis and experimental corroboration and reuse of data sets, facilitating the extraction of maximum value from data sets (...) them. However, such ‘minimum information’ MI checklists are usually developed independently by groups working within representatives of particular biologically- or technologically-delineated domains. Consequently, an overview of the full range of checklists can be difficult to establish without intensive searching, and even tracking thetheir individual evolution of single checklists may be a non-trivial exercise. Checklists are also inevitably partially redundant when measured one against another, and where they overlap is far from straightforward. Furthermore, conflicts in scope and arbitrary decisions on wording and sub-structuring make integration difficult. This presents inhibit their use in combination. Overall, these issues present significant difficulties for the users of checklists, especially those in areas such as systems biology, who routinely combine information from multiple biological domains and technology platforms. To address all of the above, we present MIBBI (Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations); a web-based communal resource for such checklists, designed to act as a ‘one-stop shop’ for those exploring the range of extant checklist projects, and to foster collaborative, integrative development and ultimately promote gradual integration of checklists. A formal sequent system dealing with Menelaus' configurations is introduced in this paper. The axiomatic sequents of the system stem from 2-cycles of Δ-complexes. The Euclidean and projective interpretations of the sequents are defined and a soundness result is proved. This system is decidable and its provable sequents deliver incidence results. A cyclic operad structure tied to this system is presented by generators and relations.

In this study we examine the relationship between the perception of being objectified in the workplace and the self-assessment of worth on a personal level, i.e. social desirability and social utility. This relationship is thought to be mediated by self-objectification in the workplace. 241 participants responded to an online questionnaire to measure these different variables. The results confirm a negative relationship between the perception of being objectified and the people’s worth, as well as mediation through self-objectification. This phenomenon could describe (...) a deleterious spiral where the worker, through the internalization of a low social value, contributes to their dehu-manization at work. (shrink)

Do Web devices (addresses, tags, networks, and the rest) have counterparts in classical ontology? Yes, but they allow us also to introduce more refined distinctions. In addition, their dynamic use could inspire a dynamic reconception of classical ontology. In the process of making explicit ontological types, different types can be undistinguished at the first step (considered as “floating types”) to be defined only in a further step, one in which their function as distinguishers of other kinds of entities has to (...) be made explicit. The fact that the ontological import of some node in a network of tags and addresses could evolve with the transformation of the network can most easily find an interpretation in this dynamic conception of ontology. Sleep has long been a topic of fascination for artists and scientists. Why do we sleep? What function does sleep serve? Why do we dream? What significance can we attach to our dreams? We spend so much of our lives sleeping, yet its precise function is unclear, in spite of our increasing understanding of the processes generating and maintaining sleep. We now know that sleep can be accompanied by periods of intense cerebral activity, yet only recently has experimental data started (...) to provide us with some insights into the type of processing taking place in the brain as we sleep. There is now strong evidence that sleep plays a crucial role in learning and in the consolidation of memories. Once the preserve of psychoanalysts, 'dreaming' is now a topic of increasing interest amongst scientists. The vast corpus attributed to Jābir b. Ḥayyān includes important elements of shī‘ī doctrine. Alchemy itself is described as an ‘imamic’ science, the purpose of which is to help mankind achieve eschatological fulfillment. This article aims to determine whether these shī‘ī elements are a fundamental part of the original Corpus Jābirianum, or if they are the result of a later set of interpolations. On the basis of one of the oldest jābirian texts, the Kitāb al-Usṭuqus al-uss I, II and III, (...) this article concludes that in jābirian alchemical doctrine, the role of the Imam is fundamental to the reception and spreading of alchemy. At the same time, the idea expressed in this text that the alchemist could achieve a level of wisdom equal to that of the Imam purely through his own research ultimately leads to a weakening of these shī‘ī positions. Agent-Based Models are useful to describe and understand social, economic and spatial systems' dynamics. But, beside the facilities which this methodology offers, evaluation and comparison of simulation models are sometimes problematic. A rigorous conceptual frame needs to be developed. This is in order to ensure the coherence in the chain linking at the one extreme the scientist's hypotheses about the modeled phenomenon and at the other the structure of rules in the computer program. This also systematizes the model design from (...) the thematician conceptual framework as well. The aim is to reflect upon the role that a well defined ontology, based on the crossing of the philosophical and the computer science insights, can play to solve such questions and help the model building. We analyze different conceptions of ontology, introduce the 'ontological test' and show its usefulness to compare models. Then we focus on the model building and show the place of a systematic ABM ontology. The latter process is situated within a larger framework called the 'knowledge framework' in which not only the ontologies but also the notions of theory, model and empirical data take place. At last the relation between emergence and ontology is discussed. (shrink)

To better conceive the socializing and pragmatic aspects of mathematics, it can be useful to use a process ontology, which allows, starting from an analysis of the processes of conversations, to compare their recourse, from degree to degree, to supposedly common “virtualities”, in particular in argumentative conversations, with the construction of more complex mathematical entities that allow new symmetries, but also with controversies between mathematicians on the use of these entities.

Research in artificial intelligence (AI) has led to revise the challenges of the AI initial programme as well as to keep us alert to peculiarities and limitations of human cognition. Both are linked, as a careful further reading of the Turing’s test makes it clear from Searle’s Chinese room apologue and from Dreyfus’ suggestions, and in both cases, ideal had to be turned into operating mode. In order to rise these more pragmatic challenges AI does not hesitate to link together (...) operations of various levels and functionalities, more specific or more general. The challenges are not met by an operating formal system which should have from the outset all the learning skills, but -for instance in simulation- by the dynamics of a succession of solutions open to adjustments as well as to reflexive repeats. La philosophie économique, dont le développement implique un accroissement accéléré de complexité (ce qui est la définition même de la complexité). Les prémices en ont été le second théorème sur l’équilibre général, et les théorèmes d’impossibilité sur le choix collectif, ou le dilemme des biens publics. Certes, il est possible d’utiliser certains facteurs de complexité, comme des mutations aléatoires, pour définir par exemple des équilibres évolutionnaires, mais ces facteurs sont aussi une source d’instabilité. L’économie expérimentale a mis en lumière la (...) dépendance de nos choix par rapport à leurs évolutions et références antérieures, ce qui est une autre source de complexité. Une exploration rationnelle de ces dépendances met elle-même en jeu la complexité de leurs processus, et implique d’incessantes révisions. Il semble inévitable, puisqu’on ne peut pas réduire les complexités qui tiennent à ces réajustements, qui impliquent un bayésianisme multi-niveaux généralisé, d’admettre que ces révisions n’aient qu’une portée limitée (« minimiser l’énergie libre »). On peut réinterpréter en ce sens les expériences sur des incohérences temporelles dans nos choix, une fois pris en compte l’application de cette minimisation aux processus mêmes d’évaluation des situations de choix. D’autres limitations pourraient être définies en combinant les contraintes neurologiques, psychologiques et économiques. Là encore, une telle combinaison est aussi une source de complexités. Mais dans un autre sens, développer ces relations complexes peut permettre de dépasser les circularités de l’inférence inverse (du neurologique à l’économie expérimentale et inversement). Enfin les simulations computationnelles nous révèlent que des évolutions que l’on croyait asymptotiques sont capables de plus lointaines divergences. Compliquer les modèles computationnels peut limiter leur généralité. Inversement les simplifier n’est utile que si cela révèle aussi quelles simplifications nous font manquer quelle complexité des interactions économiques. L’exploration de ces relations entre cette croissance accélérée de complexité liée non seulement à ces interactions mais à l’entreprise même de leur rationalisation est d’abord la tâche de l’économie dans ses différents champs, mais la philosophie de l’économie peut avoir un rôle dans l’élucidation des rapports entre ces différentes sources de complexité et leurs modalités de limitation les plus raisonnablesCode JEL : B490. The aim of this paper is to stress some ontological and methodological issues for Agent-Based Model (ABM) building, exploration, and evaluation in the Social and Human Sciences. Two particular domain of interest are to compare ABM and simulations (Model To Model) within a given academic field or across different disciplines and to use ontology for to discuss about the epistemic and methodological consequences of modeling choices. The paper starts with some definitions of ontology in philosophy and computer sciences. The implicit (...) and different ontology which underlies the approach of a same object of interest are discussed in the case of spatial economists and geographers. Finally, using the case of Shelling’s model, we discuss the concept of “ontological test,” and raise the question of the ontological compatibility between the “model world” and the “real world.”. Les études présentées dans ce volume portent sur des sujets empruntés à des domaines très divers : ceux-ci mettent en jeu des questions concernant la vie, la réalité sociale, la connaissance dont le traitement relève en particulier des compétences de l'anthropologie, de l'histoire des sciences, de la philosophie, et même de la littérature qui s'est intéressée à sa façon à ces questions. Les traverse l'hypothèse suivante : les contenus auxquels ces questions se rapportent, si différents soient les plans sur lesquels (...) ils se situent, ont en commun de n'exister qu'"à l'essai", c'est-à-dire en cours d'élaboration, en travail, dans l'effort, à la peine, à travers des formes inachevées, donc en étant confrontés en permanence au risque de la crise, ce qui n'empêche qu'ils soient entraînés dans un élan continu sans qu'on sache où celui-ci conduit ni même s'il conduit quelque part. Or, pour rendre compte de ces réalités en devenir, marquées d'incertitude à un certain degré, le mieux était de procéder identiquement "à l'essai", en lançant une dynamique d'investigation qui ne suive pas un chemin déjà tout tracé conformément à un idéal de rectitude. De là une démarche systématiquement sinueuse, appuyée sur des lectures pratiquées comme autant d'expérimentations qui mettent à l'épreuve, cas par cas, l'hypothèse de départ telle qu'elle vient d'être évoquée. En second lieu, sont proposées des lectures portant sur les paysans de Balzac, les mystères de paris de sue, le tour du monde en quatre vingt (...) jours de verne, la vie de Galilée de Brecht, les écrits mathématico- littéraires de Queneau, l'homme de Londres de Simenon, la septième face du dé de Deligny. En croisant les réflexions appelées par ces divers thèmes et textes littéraires, on prend conscience que la littérature, en se servant des moyens qui lui sont propres, qu'il ne sont pas les mêmes que ceux utilisés par la philosophie, constitue une formidable machine à faire penser que l'on aurait tort de négliger lorsqu'on s'intéresse à la philosophie : avec la littérature, on peut apprendre à philosopher autrement. La Philosophie Française, sans guillemets, ça n'existe pas. Le présent ouvrage tente d'élucider les conditions dans lesquelles, dans la période post-révolutionnaire, l'investigation philosophique, directement investie dans les transformations de la société, a revêtu les formes singulières qui ont conduit à l'identifier comme "française". Ce phénomène complexe est examiné à partir d'exemples empruntés aux principaux courants de pensée qui, de la Première République (Sieyès) à la Troisième (Barni), ont alimenté le débat d'idées au cours du XIXe siècle, à savoir le conservatisme (...) (Bonald, Maistre, Chateaubriand), le rationalisme (les Idéologues, Cousin, Renan) et le socialisme (l'école saint-simonienne, Proudhon). Mais en réfléchissant à la constitution de ces trois idéologies, on en vient à interroger la constitution du concept même d'"idéologie". Et ce qui se découvre ainsi, c'est notre histoire, celle dont nous sommes d'autant plus tributaires que nous l'ignorons. (shrink)

La question de l'identité personnelle, sous ses deux formes : " Qui suis-je? " et " Qu'est-ce que le moi? ", a souvent été traitée par des philosophes qui ont entrepris de la résoudre en empruntant la voie du raisonnement pur. Elle est ici abordée par un autre biais, à partir de trois protocoles expérimentaux qui permettent de la saisir à vif, en situation, et non dans l'abstrait : l'ouvrage que Marc Parmentier a consacré à " la philosophie des sites (...) de rencontre ", le récit fait par Jean Genet d'un étrange épisode vécu au cours d'un chemin de fer, dont les enseignements s'étaient raccordés dans son esprit à la fréquentation de deux peintres, Rembrandt et Giacometti, la série de clichés photographiques réalisés par Cindy Sherman où, en vue de mettre en scène la mythologie de la femme américaine, elle s'est prise elle-même pour modèle. L'examen de ces expériences concrètes illustre la possibilité de faire de la philosophie autrement ; s'en dégage, non une réponse inédite à la question de l'identité personnelle, mais la confirmation du caractère définitivement aporétique des interrogations auxquelles celle-ci renvoie.
