The Impact of Paternalistic Leadership on Ethical Climate: The Moderating Role of Trust in Leader. [REVIEW]Ayşe Begüm Ötken & Tuna Cenkci - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 108 (4):525 - 536.
The purpose of this empirical study is to investigate the effect of paternalistic leadership (PL) on ethical climate and the moderating role of trust in leader. Convenience sampling is used as a sampling procedure and the data were obtained from 227 Turkish employees. The findings indicated that PL had some effect on ethical climate. Furthermore, partial support was found for the moderating effect of trust in leader on the relationship between PL and ethical climate. The results of the study showed (...)

A Kantian Hybrid Theory of Art Criticism: A Particularist Appeal to the Generalists.Emine Hande Tuna - 2016 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 74 (4):397-411.
Noël Carroll proposes a generalist theory of art criticism, which essentially involves evaluations of artworks on the basis of their success value, at the cost of rendering evaluations of reception value irrelevant to criticism. In this article, I argue for a hybrid account of art criticism, which incorporates Carroll's objective model but puts Carroll-type evaluations in the service of evaluations of reception value. I argue that this hybrid model is supported by Kant's theory of taste. Hence, I not only present (...)

In this paper, in answering the question why Kant didn’t think very highly of music, I argue that for Kant (i) music unlike other art forms, lends itself more easily to combination judgments involving judgments of sense, which increases the propensity to make aesthetic mistakes and is ill-suited as an activity for improving one’s taste; (ii) music expresses aesthetic ideas and presents rational ideas only by taking advantage of existing associations while other art forms do so by breaking with the (...)

    Self-Standing Beauty: Tracing Kant’s Views on Purpose-Based Beauty.Emine Hande Tuna - 2019 - Southwest Philosophy Review 35 (1):7-16.
In his recent article, “Beauty and Utility in Kant’s Aesthetics: The Origins of Adherent Beauty,” Robert Clewis aims to offer a fresh perspective on Kant’s views on the relation between beauty and utility. While, admittedly, a fresh approach is hard to come by, given the extensive treatment of the topic, Clewis thinks that a study of its historical context and origins might give us the needed edge. The most interesting and novel aspect of Clewis’s discussion is his detailed treatment of (...)

Kant on Informed Pure Judgments of Taste.Emine Hande Tuna - 2018 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 76 (2):163-174.
Two dominant interpretations of Kant's notion of adherent beauty, the conjunctive view and the incorporation view, provide an account of how to form informed aesthetic assessments concerning artworks. According to both accounts, judgments of perfection play a crucial role in making informed, although impure, judgments of taste. These accounts only examine aesthetic responses to objects that meet or fail to meet the expectations we have regarding what they ought to be. I demonstrate that Kant's works of genius do not fall (...)

The Underridization of Nancy: Tracing the Transformations in Nancy’s Idea of Community.Emine Hande Tuna - 2014 - Journal for Cultural Research 18 (3):263-272.
My aim in this paper is to expose a misrepresentation of Jean-Luc Nancy’s ideas on community in the secondary literature. I argue that discussions of Nancy’s work have failed to recognize a transformation that has occurred in his later thought, which distances him from Jacques Derrida. I propose that Nancy’s later work points the way beyond the “persistence of unhappy consciousness” in deconstruction through allowing for the possibility of the creation of a world alternative to globalization. Recognition of this transformation (...)

Thinking with Kant's Critique of Judgment by Michel Chaouli. [REVIEW]Emine Hande Tuna - 2018 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 56 (4):762-763.
Books on Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment usually fall into one of the following sorts: introductions, in-depth companions, scholarly work offering specific interpretations of certain aspects of the book. Where does Michel Chaouli's book fit within this taxonomy? Reading the preface and the first few dozen pages, one gets the impression that it falls under the third rubric, aiming to defend a specific interpretation of Kant's aesthetic theory: in making a judgment of taste, our imagination is productive; it (...)

A Kantian Theory of Art Criticism.Emine Hande Tuna - 2016 - Dissertation, University of Alberta
I argue that Kant’s aesthetic theory yields a fruitful theory of art criticism and that this theory presents an alternative both to the existing theories of his time and to contemporary theories. In this regard, my dissertation offers an examination of a neglected area in Kant scholarship since it is standardly assumed that a theory of criticism flies in the face of some of Kant’s most central aesthetic tenets, such as his rejection of aesthetic testimony and general objective principles of (...)

Global Contested Terrain: The Case of the Tuna-Dolphin Controversy. [REVIEW]Douglas H. Constance, Alessandro Bonanno & William D. Heffernan - 1995 - Agriculture and Human Values 12 (3):19-33.
Employing the case of the global tuna-fish industry, it is argued that the process of globalization is contested terrain as it opens “free spaces” to some classes or groups and closes “free spaces” to others; that the nation-States' regulatory abilities are weakened; and finally, that while some social movements may gain, others are marginalized. Three basic conclusions are reached. (1) The industry's actions were successfully “contested” by environmental groups supported by the legislative and judicial branches of the US State. (...)

Bycatch: Interactional Expertise, Dolphins and the US Tuna Fishery.Lekelia D. Jenkins - 2007 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 38 (4):698-712.
The burgeoning field of studies in expertise and experience is a useful theoretical approach to complex problems. In light of SEE, examination of the controversial and well known case study of dolphin bycatch in the US tuna fishery, reveals that effective problem-solving was hindered by institutional tensions in respect of decision-making authority and difficulties with the integration of different expertises. Comparing the profiles of four individuals, who played distinct roles in the problem-solving process, I show that to address a (...)

Ethical Issues in Neuromarketing: “I Consume, Therefore I Am!”.Yesim Isil Ulman, Tuna Cakar & Gokcen Yildiz - 2015 - Science and Engineering Ethics 21 (5):1271-1284.
Neuromarketing is a recent interdisciplinary field which crosses traditional boundaries between neuroscience, neuroeconomics and marketing research. Since this nascent field is primarily concerned with improving marketing strategies and promoting sales, there has been an increasing public aversion and protest against it. These protests can be exemplified by the reactions observed lately in Baylor School of Medicine and Emory University in the United States. The most recent attempt to stop ongoing neuromarketing research in France is also remarkable. The pertaining ethical issues (...)

Cosmetic Psychopharmacology for Prisoners: Reducing Crime and Recidivism Through Cognitive Intervention.Adam B. Shniderman & Lauren B. Solberg - 2015 - Neuroethics 8 (3):315-326.
Criminologists have long acknowledged the link between a number of cognitive deficits, including low intelligence and impulsivity, and crime. A new wave of research has demonstrated that pharmacological intervention can restore or improve cognitive function, particularly executive function, and restore neural plasticity. Such restoration and improvement can allow for easier acquisition of new skills and as a result, presents significant possibilities for the criminal justice system. For example, studies have shown that supplements of Omega-3, a fatty acid commonly found in (...)

The proposition that sheer labels or categories are important in people's reactions to the treatment of animals was supported by evidence from two sources. First, print archives showed that in the real world animals with a great deal in common such as dolphins and tuna in the same nets; cats and dogs, and pigs and goats in the same laboratories; and native and feral species in the same parks are viewed or treated quite differently by humans. Second, original experiments (...)

Contrastive Focus Reduplication in English (the Salad-Salad Paper).Ray Jackendoff - unknown
This paper presents a phenomenon of colloquial English that we call Contrastive Reduplication (CR), involving the copying of words and sometimes phrases as in It’s tuna salad, not SALAD-salad, or Do you LIKE-HIM-like him? Drawing on a corpus of examples gathered from natural speech, written texts, and television scripts, we show that CR restricts the interpretation of the copied element to a ‘real’ or prototypical reading. Turning to the structural properties of the construction, we show that CR is unusual (...)

At the Vanguard of Contemporary Muslim Thought: Reading Said Nursi Into the Islamic Tradition.Tuna Mustafa - 2017 - Journal of Islamic Studies 28 (3):311-340.
Despite his growing renown as a Kurdish-origin scholar of Islam from post-Ottoman Turkey, academia and the transregional networks of Islamic scholarship rarely engage the content of Said Nursî’s innovative works. Against the background of various historical and cultural circumstances that produce such intellectual peripherality, this article suggests that Nursî’s system of theological contemplation expands the limits of Muslim religious thought from within the Sunni Islamic tradition, by incorporating aspects of the Muslim creed that have conventionally been substantiated based on textual (...)

Sharing, Consumption, and Patch Choice on Ifaluk Atoll.Richard Sosis - 2001 - Human Nature 12 (3):221-245.
Anthropological tests of patch choice models from optimal foraging theory have primarily employed acquisition rates as the currency of the model. Where foragers share their returns, acquisition rates may not be similar to consumption rates and thus may not be an appropriate currency to use when modeling foraging decisions. Indeed, on Ifaluk Atoll the distribution patterns of fish vary by fishing method and location. Previous analyses of Ifaluk patch choice decisions suggested that if Ifaluk fishers are trying to maximize their (...)
