Universally recognized as bringing about a revolutionary transformation of the notions of space, time, and motion in physics, Einstein's theory of gravitation, known as "general relativity," was also a defining event for 20th century philosophy of science. During the decisive first ten years of the theory's existence, two main tendencies dominated its philosophical reception. This book is an extended argument that the path actually taken, which became logical empiricist philosophy of science, greatly contributed to the current impasse over realism, whereas (...) new possibilities are opened in revisiting and reviving the spirit of the more sophisticated tendency, a cluster of viewpoints broadly termed transcendental idealism, and furthering its articulation. It also emerges that Einstein, while paying lip service to the emerging philosophy of logical empiricism, ended up siding de facto with the latter tendency. Ryckman's work speaks to several groups, among them philosophers of science and historians of relativity. Rhetoric is widely regarded by both its detractors and advocates as a kind of antithesis to reason. In this book Thomas B. Farrell restores rhetoric as an art of practical reason and enlightened civic participation, grounding it in its classical tradition—particularly in the rhetoric of Aristotle. And, because prevailing modernist world views bear principal responsibility for the disparagement of rhetorical tradition, Farrell also offers a critique of the dominant currents of modern humanist thought. This textbook introduces undergraduate students of language and linguistics to the basic ideas, insights, and techniques of contemporary semantic theory. The book starts with everyday observations about word meaning and use and then gradually zooms in on the question of how speakers manage to meaningfully communicate with phrases, sentences, and texts they have never come across before. Extensive English examples provide ample illustration.

As one of America’s "public intellectuals," John Dewey was engaged in a lifelong struggle to understand the human mind and the nature of human inquiry. According to Thomas C. The period after World War Two saw the emergence both of the so-called later Heidegger and of the corresponding problem of the unity of his thought. Although his major work, Sein und Zeit, 1927 (=SZ) had announced Heidegger's intention of working out the meaning of being (Sein), his publications up through 1943, with the exception of the brief Vom Wesen der Wahrheit, presented only his preparatory analysis of human openness (Dasein). However, Heidegger's post-war publications seemed to emphasize “being itself” (the (...) history of being, being as language, pre-Socratic notions of being, the withdrawal of being in the modern world) and indeed almost seemed to hypostasize being into an "other" with a life of its own. This state of affairs, combined with Heidegger's announcement in 1953 that SZ would be left a torso, gave rise to such questions as whether his later thought was still phenomenological, how it might be continuous with his earlier writings, and how, if indeed at all, it was to be understood. This is the first study to recognise the broad impact of opera in early-modern French culture._Downing A. Thomas considers the use of operatic spectacle and music by Louis XIV as a vehicle for absolutism; the resistance of music to the aesthetic and political agendas of the time; and the long-term development of opera in eighteenth-century humanist culture. He argues that French opera moved away from the politics of the absolute monarchy in which it originated to address Enlightenment concerns with (...) sensibility and feeling. The book combines close readings of significant seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century operatic works, circumstantial writings and theoretical works on theatre and opera, together with a measure of reception history. Wenn nach bleibenden philosophischen Beiträgen von Theodor W. Adorno gefragt wird, so werden meist drei mögliche Kandidaten erwogen: seine Analysen der spätkapitalistischen Kultur und Gesellschaft, seine Ästhetische Theorie und der von ihm entwickelte besondere Typ philosophischer Kritik, der unter dem Titel negative Dialektik bekannt ist. Seltener, wenn überhaupt, wird jemand die Ansicht vertreten, ein bleibender Beitrag Adornos bestehe in einer besonderen Moralphilosophie. Zwar trägt das am weitesten verbreitete Werk Adornos, die Minima Moralia, die Moral bereits im Titel. Jenes Buch aber (...) hebt schon in den ersten Zeilen mit der These an, dass die Lehre vom richtigen Leben heute nicht mehr der eigentliche Bereich der Philosophie sein könne, da das, was der Philosophie einmal »Leben hieß, [...] zur Sphäre des Privaten und dann bloß noch des Konsums geworden« sei. Statt einer Lehre vom guten Leben bleibt für die Philosophie nur eine Reflexion auf seine Beschädigung möglich. Wo immer Adorno sich der Moralphilosophie selbst zuwendet, markiert er in diesem Sinne vor allem ihre Antinomien und Aporien. Die Annahme liegt nahe, dass die Herausstellung solcher Widersprüche nur darauf zielen kann, uns vorzuführen, dass die Moralphilosophie ihren Gegenstand nicht – oder: nicht mehr – zu denken vermag und allenfalls expressive Funktionen hat für eine Gesellschaft, die von Antagonismen durchzogen ist. Eine positive Theorie der Moral scheint in diesem Sinne durch die Form unserer Gesellschaft und die ihr korrespondierenden Formen des Denkens verstellt. Gegen diese durchaus begründete Lesart möchte ich im Folgenden die These vertreten, dass Adornos Beiträge in diesem Feld noch eine weiterreichende Deutung erlauben. Die Aporien der Moralphilosophie verweisen nicht allein auf ihnen unterliegende gesellschaftliche Widersprüche, sondern zugleich auf innere Spannungen, die dem moralischen Handeln wesentlich sind: In der kritischen Reflexion auf die moderne Moralphilosophie und moralisches Handeln in der modernen Gesellschaft gewinnt Adorno eine dialektische Bestimmung dieses Handelns, dergemäß es sich dadurch auszeichnet, dass es Widersprüche des Handelns auf besondere Weise austrägt. Die ›Aporien der Moralphilosophie‹ verweisen für Adorno so auf eine ›Moral der Aporien‹ – sie verweisen auf innere Spannungen, die für das Moralische selbst konstitutiv sind. Moralisches Handeln ist dadurch charakterisiert, dass es die Spannungen von Besonderem und Allgemeinen, Freiheit und Gesetz, Natur und Geist, die menschliches Handeln wesentlich ausmachen, als Spannungen aushält und austrägt. Eine aporetische Moralphilosophie verweist so nicht zwingend auf die schlichte Unmöglichkeit ihres Gegenstands oder ihre eigene Unangemessenheit. Im Herausstellen innerer Widersprüche des Moralischen kann vielmehr im Gegenteil eine Erkenntnis des Moralischen liegen: eine Erkenntnis seiner dialektischen und gespannten Natur. (shrink)

In two experiments, subjects’ task was to decide whether a binocularly viewed target word was evaluatively good (e.g., fame, comedy, rescue) or bad (e.g., stress, detest, malaria) in meaning. Just prior to this target word, a priming word was presented to the nondominant eye, and masked by an immediately following presentation of a letter—fragment pattern to the dominant eye. (Masking effectiveness was demonstrated by subjects’ failure to discriminate the left vs. right position of a test series of words.) In Experiment (...) 1, which used evaluatively positive or negative words as priming stimuli, judgment latency for the evaluative decision task was facilitated by primes that agreed in evaluation with targets, and was retarded by primes that disagreed in evaluation with targets. This result demonstrated that the evaluative meaning of priming stimuli was processed under conditions that prevented subjects from detecting their presence. Primes in Experiment 2 were 2-word strings for which the evaluative meaning of individual words was orthogonal to the evaluative sentence meaning (e.g., the two evaluatively negative words, "enemy fails,“ make up an evaluatively positive sentence). Results of Experiment 2 indicated that masked priming effects were influenced by the evaluative meanings of individual words, but not by their sentence meanings. This result supported the conclusion that the processing of undetected, dichoptically masked words is limited to analyses that are not powerful enough to extract sentence meanings. (shrink)

These are two of the questions that inform the extraordinary open letter that Martin Heidegger published in 1955 in a Festschrift celebrating Ernst Jünger's sixtieth birthday.2 Heidegger's letter was in response to an essay that Jünger had contributed six years earlier, in 1949, to a Festschrift on Heidegger's own sixtieth birthday. So there was a certain reciprocity in the exchange: a favor returned, a public gesture of respect mirroring an earlier one.

Soft robots promise an exciting design trajectory in the field of robotics and human–robot interaction (HRI), promising more adaptive, resilient movement within environments as well as a safer, more sensitive interface for the objects or agents the robot encounters. In particular, tactile HRI is a critical dimension for designers to consider, especially given the onrush of assistive and companion robots into our society. In this article, we propose to surface an important set of ethical challenges for the field of soft (...) robotics to meet. Tactile HRI strongly suggests that soft-bodied robots balance tactile engagement against emotional manipulation, model intimacy on the bonding with a tool not with a person, and deflect users from personally and socially destructive behavior the soft bodies and surfaces could normally entice. Is it really all about greed, money, and shareholder value? Seven Management Moralities examines management's moral behaviour from seven different perspectives. These are derived from Kohlberg's development of human morality.

The right to bodily integrity (RBI) may seem inapt for inclusion in this volume, which is supposed to address new human rights, for as A. M. Viens notes, the RBI is a long-standing fixture in the philosophical and legal discussion of rights. However, Viens does, I think, make a good case for the right’s inclusion here. Not only does he note the increasing recognition of a new right to genital integrity derived from the more general RBI, he also argues for (...) a new conceptualisation of the RBI itself: he argues that we ought to decompose the RBI into several constituent rights, delineated according to the different values from which they derive – rights to bodily autonomy, bodily dignity, bodily ownership, well-being, and so on. Martin Heidegger's 1925–26 lectures on truth and time provided much of the basis for his momentous work, Being and Time. Not published until 1976 as volume 21 of the Complete Works, three months before Heidegger's death, this work is central to Heidegger's overall project of reinterpreting Western thought in terms of time and truth. The text shows the degree to which Aristotle underlies Heidegger's hermeneutical theory of meaning.
