  1. Income and Quality of Life: Does the Love of Money Make a Difference?T. L. P. Tang - 2007 - Journal of Business Ethics 72 (4):375-393.
This paper examines a model of income and quality of life that controls the love of money, job satisfaction, gender, and marital status and treats employment status (full-time versus part-time), income level, and gender as moderators. For the whole sample, income was not significantly related to quality of life when this path was examined alone. When all variables were controlled, income was negatively related to quality of life. When (1) the love of money was negatively correlated to job satisfaction and (...)

Philosophers of Peace and War: Kant, Clausewitz, Marx, Engels, and Tolstoy. [REVIEW]L. P. T. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 33 (2):422-423.
This study attempts to highlight and clarify the central themes in four important theoretical perspectives on the nature of war and the international order. Perhaps because it is an enlarged version of the Wiles lectures, the book is written with a refreshing verve and fluent, relaxed elegance—purchased at the cost of some redundancy and lack of crispness. The bulk of the work consists of four largely independent essays, each dealing with a single thinker or outlook. The essay dealing with Marx (...)

    Political Theory and International Relations. [REVIEW]L. P. T. - 1980 - Review of Metaphysics 34 (1):126-128.
This is a revised dissertation and exhibits some of the infelicities of that genre: verbosity, didacticism, and repetitiveness. The first two parts criticize the two "prevailing conceptions of international relations". The third section points the way to a "more cosmopolitan" perspective vaguely inspired by Kant and grounded in Rawls. Beitz mentions in passing that prior to the mid-seventeenth century "a different conception of international order had been ascendant", but he is otherwise ignorant of both the classical and the medieval theories (...)

How do clinicians prepare family members for the role of surrogate decision-maker?T. V. Cunningham, L. P. Scheunemann, R. M. Arnold & D. White - 2017 - Journal of Medical Ethics Recent Issues 44 (1):21-26.
Purpose Although surrogate decision-making is prevalent in intensive care units and concerns with decision quality are well documented, little is known about how clinicians help family members understand the surrogate role. We investigated whether and how clinicians provide normative guidance to families regarding how to function as a surrogate. Subjects and methods We audiorecorded and transcribed 73 ICU family conferences in which clinicians anticipated discussing goals of care for incapacitated patients at high risk of death. We developed and applied a (...)

mCSEM Data Interpretation for Hydrocarbon Exploration: A Fast Interpretation Workflow for Drilling Decision.Marco Polo P. Buonora, Jorlivan L. Correa, Luciano S. Martins, Paulo T. L. Menezes, Emanuel J. C. Pinho, Joao L. Silva Crepaldi, Mirela P. P. Ribas, Sergio M. Ferreira & Rafael C. Freitas - 2014 - Interpretation: SEG 2 (3):SH1-SH11.
In a hydrocarbon exploration workflow, marine controlled-source electromagnetic data are usually acquired after seismic interpretation for prospect identification and close-to-the-drilling decision making. Therefore, the mCSEM interpreter must provide quick answers to the asset teams in a way that the EM interpretation can add value to that decision. To achieve that goal, Petrobras developed a fast-track mCSEM interpretation workflow that consists in identifying anomalies in the mCSEM data set by frequency normalization, and then performing 1D CMP inversions followed by 2.5D polygonal (...)

Broadband Marine Controlled-Source Electromagnetic for Subsalt and Around Salt Exploration.Andrea Zerilli, Marco P. Buonora, Paulo T. L. Menezes, Tiziano Labruzzo, Adriano J. A. Marçal & João L. Silva Crepaldi - 2016 - Interpretation: SEG 4 (4):T521-T531.
Salt basins, mainly Tertiary basins with mobilized salt, are notoriously difficult places to explore because of the traditionally poor seismic images typically obtained around and below salt bodies. In areas where the salt structures are extremely complex, the seismic signal-to-noise ratio may still be limited and, therefore, complicate the estimation of the velocity field variations that could be used to migrate the seismic data correctly and recover a good image suitable for prospect generation. We have evaluated the results of an (...)

Particles Vs. Events: The Concatenated Structure of World Lines in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics. [REVIEW]R. Arshansky, L. P. Horwitz & Y. Lavie - 1983 - Foundations of Physics 13 (12):1167-1194.
The dynamical equations of relativistic quantum mechanics prescribe the motion of wave packets for sets of events which trace out the world lines of the interacting particles. Electromagnetic theory suggests thatparticle world line densities be constructed from concatenation of event wave packets. These sequences are realized in terms of conserved probability currents. We show that these conserved currents provide a consistent particle and antiparticle interpretation for the asymptotic states in scattering processes. The relation between current conservation and unitarity is used (...)

    The Language of Virgil and Horace.L. P. Wilkinson - 1959 - Classical Quarterly 9 (3-4):181-.
As in literature poetry precedes prose, so in poetry a special and ‘heightened’ diction seems to precede everyday language. Mr.T.S.Eliot has put it thus: ‘Every revolution in poetry is apt to be, and sometimes to announce itself as, a return to common speech.’ How does this apply to Greek and Latin ? There are objections to considering words in isolation from this point of view, since neutral ones are apt to go now grey, now purple, according to their company; but (...)

    The Landau-Peierls Relation and a Causal Bound in Covariant Relativistic Quantum Theory.R. Arshansky & L. P. Horwitz - 1985 - Foundations of Physics 15 (6):701-715.
Thought experiments analogous to those discussed by Landau and Peierls are studied in the framework of a manifestly covariant relativistic quantum theory. It is shown that momentum and energy can be arbitrarily well defined, and that the drifts induced by measurement in the positions and times of occurrence of events remain within the (stable) spread of the wave packet in space-time. The structure of the Newton-Wigner position operator is studied in this framework, and it is shown that an analogous time (...)

    Studies in Process Philosophy II. [REVIEW]T. L. E. - 1977 - Review of Metaphysics 31 (1):130-130.
Process philosophy is said by some to be the future of American philosophy. This collection of essays, ranging from studies of Whitehead to Camus and Sir Muhammad Iqbal, extends the discussion far beyond the boundaries of North America. Several of the essays are of a more systematic character. Donald Hanks analyzes the category of process as a pre-conceptual principle used to organize experience into an intelligible pattern. Andrew Reck provides an analysis of the meaning and justification of what he considers (...)

The education of students and professionals in business ethics is an increasingly important goal on the agenda of business schools and corporations. The present study provides a meta-analysis of 25 previously conducted business ethics instructional programs. The role of criteria, study design, participant characteristics, quality of instruction, instructional content, instructional program characteristics, and characteristics of instructional methods as moderators of the effectiveness of business ethics instruction were examined. Overall, results indicate that business ethics instructional programs have a minimal␣impact on increasing (...)

    Equilibrium Relativistic Mass Distribution for Indistinguishable Events.L. Burakovsky & L. P. Horwitz - 1995 - Foundations of Physics 25 (6):785-818.
A manifestly covariant relativistic statistical mechanics of a system of N indistinguishable events with motion in space-time parametrized by an invariant “historical time” τ is considered. The relativistic mass distribution for such a system is obtained from the equilibrium solution of the generalized relativistic Boltzmann equation by integration over angular and hyperangular variables. All the characteristic averages are calculated. Expressions for the pressure and the energy density are found, and the relativistic equation of state is obtained. Validity criteria are defined. (...)

    Identification of a Non-Linear Model as a New Method to Detect Expiratory Airflow Limitation in Mechanically Ventilated Patients.S. Khirani, L. Biot, P. Lavagne, A. Duguet, T. Similowski & P. Baconnier - 2004 - Acta Biotheoretica 52 (4):241-254.
Expiratory flow limitation (EFL) can occur in mechanically ventilated patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other disorders. It leads to dynamic hyperinflation with ensuing deleterious consequences. Detecting EFL is thus clinically relevant. Easily applicable methods however lack this detection being routinely made in intensive care. Using a simple mathematical model, we propose a new method to detect EFL that does not require any intervention or modification of the ongoing therapeutic. The model consists in a monoalveolar representation of the respiratory (...)

The Jequitinhonha Basin is one of the sedimentary basins in the Brazilian Eastern Margin. Although several regional studies have been conducted to define its tectonic framework and petroleum system, neither one is very well-understood. For instance, the extent and influence of the volcanic rocks in the petroleum system of the JB are still matters of debate among geoscientists. We found a new integrated interpretation for the structural framework of JB in which we discover the major faults, the mapped volcanics, and (...)
