    Systems of private regulation based on certification have recently emerged to address environmental issues in the forest products industry and labor issues in the apparel industry.     My goal in this essay will be to show, contra Parfit, that the separateness of human persons—although metaphysically shallow—has a moral significance that should not be overlooked.
