Nijhawan redraws our attention to the problem of accurately perceiving an ever-changing visual world via a sensory system that has finite and significant communication times. The quandary is compelling and stark, but the suggestion that the visual system can compensate for these transmission delays by extrapolating the present is not so unequivocal. However, in this current airing of contradictory issues, accounts, and findings, Nijhawan trades spatial extrapolation a far more expansive notion that forces the issue of both the perceived reality (...) and functional significance of compensation. In the imagery debate, a key question concerns the inherent spatial nature of mental images. What do we mean by spatial representation? We explore a new idea that suggests that motion is instrumental in the coding of visual space. How is the imagery debate informed by the representation of space being determined by visual motion?

In this chapter, I consider the relation of the three major spheres of ethical life that Hegel distinguishes – family, civil society, and the state – and analyse their contribution to the constitution of the "second nature" of objective spirit. Family and civil society are both analyzed by Hegel as ways of taking up and transforming our given nature such that a second ethical nature can be produced. Where the family helps bring forth such a second nature by means of (...) “education” (Erziehung), civil society does so by means of “cultural formation” (Bildung). As I show in sections (I) and (II), these processes are characterised by Hegel as steps of an actualization of freedom insofar they liberate us from our given nature without suppressing it and bring forth a second nature that gives freedom the consistency of living reality. However, while these processes constitute forms of liberation, they are at the same time forms of social subjection, involving discipline and normalization, the subjection to the will of another, and the adaption to the given necessities of the social world. Therefore, the completion of the process of liberation seems to require a third sphere that allows individuals to relate, collectively and politically, to the second nature thus produced. In order for the second nature of spirit to be a self-constitutive actualization of freedom, ethical life thus requires a specific political dimension that I turn to in section (III). While this political process is only possible on the basis of the republican infrastructures of family and civil society, it at the same time calls these infrastructures into question. Although Hegel himself does not develop this dimension properly, his conception of second nature points towards the desideratum of a politics of second nature. I will close the discussion of this political dimension in section (IV) by pointing out the general and diagnostic dimensions that such a politics of second nature can help us elaborate. (shrink)

For post-Kantian philosophy, “life” is a transitory concept that relates the realm of nature to the realm of freedom. From this vantage point, the living seems to have the double character of being both already and not yet free: Compared with the external necessity of dead nature, the living already seems to exhibit a basic type of spontaneity and normativity that on the other hand still has to be superseded on the path to the freedom and normativity of spirit. The (...) contributions in the third volume of the series Freedom and Law take their departure from Hegel in order to investigate the extent to which we need figures and concepts of the living to understand the genesis and structure of theoretical and practical self-determination. In these analyses, Hegel’s philosophy reveals itself as a thinking not restricted to a mere opposition between the determinations of life and the freedom of spirit, but rather conceives of a freedom that realizes itself in and through life: a freedom of life. In this introductory paper, I discuss the second-personal approach to ethics and the theory of recognition as two accounts of the fundamental sociality of the human form of life. The first section delineates the deep affinities between the two approaches. They both put a reciprocal social constellation front and center from which they derive the fundamental norms of moral and social life and a social conception of freedom. The second section discusses three points of contrast between the two approaches: The (...) accounts differ in that the second-personal approach opts for a narrower conception of recognition focusing on mutual moral accountability, whereas recognition theory suggests a broader conception including relations of love, respect, and esteem. Secondly, the accounts differ as to how they conceive of the interrelation of the I-thou and the I-We relationship. Finally, they differ with regard to the way they think of struggles for recognition. Whereas the second-personal approach suggests that we can understand struggles on the basis of a transcendental infrastructure of second-personal address, the theory of recognition considers norms of recognition as themselves constituted by dialectical social struggles. The paper closes with a reflection on the ways in which both approaches can help us understand the social vulnerability of the human form of life. (shrink)

The paper argues that Kant’s distinction between pure and empirical apperception cannot be interpreted as distinguishing two self-standing types of self-knowledge. For Kant, empirical and pure apperception need to co-operate to yield substantive self-knowledge. What makes Kant’s account interesting is his acknowledgment that there is a deep tension between the way I become conscious of myself as subject through pure apperception and the way I am given to myself as an object of inner sense. This tension remains problematic in the (...) realm of theoretical cognition but can be put to work and made productive in terms of practical self-knowledge. (shrink)

In diesem doppelten Genitiv wird so ein Übergang angedeutet von der Freiheit, die dem Leben als solchem zukommt, zu dem eigenen Leben, das die Freiheit führt. Inwiefern aber ist schon das Leben frei und inwiefern besitzt auch (...) die Freiheit immer noch ein Leben? Warum mag es unserem Verständnis der Freiheit und des Lebens dienen, ihren inneren Zusammenhang zu begreifen? Und in welchem Sinne genau sind Leben und Freiheit aufeinander zu beziehen? -/- Die folgenden Überlegungen werden drei aufeinander bezogene Weisen erläutern, in denen Freiheit und Leben in einem wesentlichen Zusammenhang stehen: (1) Freiheit ist ein Vermögen, das sich nur in lebenden Wesen herausbilden kann. (2) Um die Form der Freiheit zu verstehen, müssen wir die Form des Lebens verstehen. The way in which a schema represents something is precisely by abstracting from some of its features; in a schema, representation and abstraction are thus not opposed to each other but rather internally related. The first part of this paper investigates this internal relation by delineating Kant’s concept of schema as the term mediating concept and intuition. Due to its pivotal position, however, the schema tends to collapse either into the conceptual or into the intuitive. The second part of the (...) paper turns to Heidegger who tries to overcome this difficulty: he does not conceive the schema as a supplementary representation that connects already determinate concepts and intuitions, but rather locates schematization immanently in the very articulation of concept and intuition themselves. The third part of the paper proposes that the schematicity of our representations can be reflected in three pictorial strategies that are important for contemporary art: reduction, serialization, and reconstruction. These strategies are exemplified in certain images which put us in a position to see through our own representational form, as it were, and observe the procedures of figuration involved in that very form. While the concept of “second nature” has received remarkable attention in recent years, the discussion has mainly focused on neo-Aristotelian accounts. In this paper, I develop a neglected post-Kantian alternative. Instead of focusing solely on the model of habit, this conception shifts our attention to a different paradigm for second nature: the work of art. Following Kant’s account in the third critique, producing a work of art can be understood as the production of an “other nature”, expressive of freedom. As (...) the post-Kantian tradition from Schiller and Hegel to Marx and Nietzsche suggests, the work of art can thus serve as a model for the kind of second nature we require in order to realize an ethical life. Thus, the production of an ethical second nature is not a matter of mere habituation, but a challenging “art”: it is an aesthetic task, a complex dialectical exercise, and a social practice of objectification. This conception of second nature not only allows us to grasp the relation of freedom and nature more adequately than the dominant neo-Aristotelian conceptions – it also opens up a critical perspective on our contemporary aesthetic self-understanding. In which sense can human beings be conceived as social animals? To elucidate this question, the present paper distinguishes the logical sociality of all living beings from the material sociality of social animals and the political sociality of self-conscious social animals. The self-conscious political sociality that characterises the human genus-being requires a complex interplay of first and second person through which alone we can participate in our form of life and determine its content. The human form of life thus constituted (...) is characterised by a particularly open, and at the same time precarious, membership which involves specific forms of vulnerability and power. Against this background, forms of objective spirit are necessary which grant us a generalized recognition and relieve us from the contingency of each particular second-personal recognition, without abandoning the openness of the sociality of the human form of life. This double requirement has led to paradoxical institutions in modern society which strive to protect and ensure the sociality of the human form of life precisely by naturalising and individualising our access to it. This paper revisits the concept of autonomy and tries to elucidate the fundamental insight that freedom and law cannot be understood through their opposition, but rather have to be conceived of as conditions of one another. The paper investigates the paradigmatic Kantian formulation of this insight and discusses the diagnosis that the Kantian idea might give rise to a paradox in which autonomy reverts to arbitrariness or heteronomy. The paper argues that the fatal version of the paradox can be defused (...) if we avoid the legalistic model of autonomy and rather turn to the model of participation in a practice. This leads to a dialectical understanding of the idea of autonomy that preserves the insight that freedom and law are mutually conditioning and simultaneously reveals that they remain in irresolvable tension with one another. Die Weise, in der dieser Gedanke ausgeführt und begründet werden soll, ist eine systematische Entwicklung in zwei Zügen: Zum einen gilt es, die basale und implizite Gedächtnishaftigkeit des Sinns zu charakterisieren; zum anderen werden Formen des expliziten (...) Gedächtnisses auf dieser Grundlage neu verstanden und als Reflexionsfiguren der Zeitlichkeit des Sinns ausgewiesen. Der Begriff der Lebensform spielt eine ebenso zentrale wie vielgestaltige Rolle in der Philosophie der Gegenwart. Er dient einerseits dazu, auf die menschliche Lebensform als den Grund und Horizont aller Normativität zu verweisen, wie er andererseits dazu verwendet wird, die Vielfalt möglicher besonderer Lebensweisen zu fassen. Bemerkenswerterweise kommen die beiden Extrempunkte des Verwendungsspektrums dabei in einer entscheidenden Hinsicht überein: Lebensformen scheinen sich der Kritik zu entziehen – entweder, weil sie zu fundamental sind, um begründet oder mit Gründen infrage gestellt zu (...) werden; oder aber, weil sie im Bereich individueller oder kollektiver Wahlmöglichkeiten liegen, denen gegenüber die normativen Prinzipien öffentlicher Gerechtigkeit neutral bleiben sollten. In beiden Hinsichten werden Lebensformen in gewisser Hinsicht als normativ unverfügbar gedacht: als unüberschreitbarer und nicht weiter begründbarer Grund unserer normativen Orientierung oder als kontingenter und beliebiger Inhalt normativ gleichermaßen zulässiger Wahl. Rahel Jaeggi verfolgt in "Kritik von Lebensformen" das interessante Vorhaben, den Begriff der Lebensform auf eine solche Weise neu zu bestimmen, dass ihre Kritisierbarkeit einsichtig werden kann. Der Beitrag prüft den für dieses Vorhaben zentralen Gedanken, dass Lebensformen als Problemlösungsinstanzen verstanden werden können. Gegen die pragmatistische Idee, dass die Probleme von Lebensformen auf ihre Lösung, Beseitigung oder Überwindung drängen, schlägt der Beitrag mit Foucault, Luhmann und Deleuze vor, dass Lebensformprobleme vor allem ausgetragen und entfaltet werden wollen. Khurana distinguishes different ways in which Derrida’s deconstruction can be understood as an attempt at transforming the transcendental question. Derrida’s essay “Cogito and the History of Madness” might lead us to the assumption that Derrida’s primary interest lies in a move of radicalization: in identifying conditions that are even more fundamental or basic than the conditions of the acts of our theoretical and practical cognition that transcendental philosophy has highlighted. He suggests, however, that instead of a mere radicalization, Derrida’s (...) decisive move in the transformation of the transcendental question resides rather in complicating the way we understand these conditions of possibility: (i) in an attempt to reveal conditions of the possibility of a certain type of act as being simultaneously the conditions of the impossibility of the purity of this act (a project that is sometimes termed “quasi-transcendental”); and (ii) an attempt to complicate the distinction between empirical and transcendental conditions (an investigation that is sometimes called “ultra-transcendental”). In a broadly Kantian context, it is often assumed that practical self-consciousness and rational self-determination can only be understood in opposition to pleasure and desire. I argue instead that, already for Kant, rational self-determination is itself a determination of our faculty of desire. Drawing on resources from Kant and Hegel, the paper shows that sensible desire can be understood as a self-determination of our vital forces which is connected to a sensible awareness of our practical existence. In order to constitute (...) what Kant calls a higher faculty of desire, we need to develop a practical self-consciousness of this sensible desire. As Hegel develops this idea, such self-consciousness involves grasp of the very form of desire that is occluded in its sensible form, as well as a reflexive redoubling of desire whereby desire becomes its own object. It is, by now, a well-established thesis that one major path that runs from Kant, through Fichte and Schelling, up to Hegel is defined by the conception of freedom as autonomy. It is less known and has been less frequently the object of study that from Kant to Hegel a new idea of life takes shape as well. Even less taken into account is the fact that these two paths from Kant to Hegel might be systematically intertwined. If the notion (...) of life in German Idealism is discussed at all, it has been discussed mostly in dealing with the philosophies of nature and biology of Kant and his successors. This framing is, of course, not wrong in itself; yet to my mind we can only fully account for the thought of what is living and the new interest that the idealist philosophies of nature actually deserve if we regard life as a practical notion. For the idealists, life is, as Fichte has it, an “analogue of freedom in nature,” and it describes the one form of object we can encounter in nature that possesses a kind of unity and organization that comes close to the unity and the organization of spirit. In various accounts of German Idealism, life is not only regarded as an analogue of a self-grounded order, but figures furthermore as a precondition of the actuality of freedom: It is in being alive that we might become free. How exactly this is so is of course not only a very complicated issue but also a contested one among Kant and his successors. In order to outline at least two basic approaches to relating ‘life’ and ‘autonomy,’ I would like to present a sketch of a reading of Kant, in whose works the analogy of life and autonomy first manifests itself, and of Hegel, who has to my mind most fully developed the potential of this constellation. What Marx calls Gattungswesen is precisely not a ‘species-being,’ but a being that, in a very specific sense, transcends the limits of its own given species. This different understanding of the genus-character (...) of the human being opens up a new perspective on the naturalism of the early Marx. He is not informed by a problematic speciesist and essentialist naturalism, as is often assumed, but by a different form of naturalism which I propose to call ‘dialectical naturalism.’ The chapter starts (I) by developing Hegel’s account of genus which provides us with a useful background for (II) understanding Marx’s original notion of a genus-being and its practical, social, developmental character. In the last section, I show that (III) the actualization of our genus-being thus depends on the production of a specific type of ‘second nature’ that is at the heart of Marx’s dialectical naturalism. This article draws on historical material to examine the co-evolution of economic science and business education over the course of the twentieth century, showing that fields evolve not only through internal struggles but also through struggles taking place in adjacent fields. More specifically, we argue that the scientific strategies of business schools played an essential—if largely invisible and poorly understood—role in major transformations in the organization and substantive direction of social-scientific knowledge, and specifically economic knowledge, in twentieth century America. We (...) use the Wharton School as an illustration of the earliest trends and dilemmas (ca. 1900–1930), when business schools found themselves caught between their business connections and their striving for moral legitimacy in higher education. Next, we look at the creation of the Carnegie Tech Graduate School of Industrial Administration after World War II. This episode illustrates the increasingly successful claims of social scientists, backed by philanthropic foundations, on business education and the growing appeal of “scientific” approaches to decision-making and management. Finally, we argue that the rise of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago from the 1960s onwards (and its closely related cousin at the University of Rochester) marks the decisive ascendancy of economics, and particularly financial economics, in business education over the other behavioral disciplines. We document the key role of these institutions in diffusing “Chicago-style” economic approaches—offering support for deregulatory policies and popularizing narrowly financial understandings of the firm—that sociologists have described as characteristic of the modern neo liberal regime. In this paper, I discuss Karen Ng's reconstruction of Hegel's concept of life. On Ng's account, Hegel's conception of life has a remarkable double role to play: Life is both the proper object of judgment as well as a fundamental characterization of the activity of the judging subject. In a first step, I highlight the insight that Ng's account sheds on the internal connection of life and self-consciousness and the peculiar normativity of life. In a second step, I raise three (...) concerns about Ng's strong focus on the logical notion of life which she characterizes as non-empirical and a priori. I argue that in order to uncover the full significance of the notion of life for Hegel we have to turn to his Philosophy of Nature and Spirit. (shrink)

The way in which a schema represents something is precisely by abstracting from some of its features; in a schema, representation and abstraction are thus not opposed to each other but rather internally related. The first part of this paper investigates this internal relation by delineating Kant’s concept of schema as the term mediating concept and intuition. Due to its pivotal position, however, the schema tends to collapse either into the conceptual or into the intuitive. The second part of the (...) paper turns to Heidegger who tries to overcome this difficulty: he does not conceive the schema as a supplementary representation that connects already determinate concepts and intuitions, but rather locates schematization immanently in the very articulation of concept and intuition themselves. The third part of the paper proposes that the schematicity of our representations can be reflected in three pictorial strategies that are important for contemporary art: reduction, serialization, and reconstruction. These strategies are exemplified in certain images which put us in a position to see through our own representational form, as it were, and observe the procedures of figuration involved in that very form. However, these organisations are facing a dilemma in terms of their focus priority. Is it the composition of the board or is it the employee as the stakeholder that has high determining power to reach their goals. The paper utilises the Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) methodology to understand the mutual influence among the various enablers in such a fashion that the enablers having high driving power and dependency power can be identified. Das Leben tritt in Hegels Phänomenologie des Geistes an einem äußerst bedeutenden „Wendungspunkt“ auf, an dem das Bewusstsein sich als Selbstbewusstsein erfasst und mithin den Begriff des Geistes gewinnt. Das Leben ist die letzte Gegenstandsform, die dem Bewusstsein gegenüberliegt, bevor es sich selbst als seinen Gegenstand erfasst. Durch diese Schwellenposition wird die Figur des Lebendigen zu einem besonderem Reflexionsmedium für die Struktur des Geistigen: Der Geist tritt im Medium des Lebens in Gestalten eines Noch nicht und des Schon da auf, (...) die ihm eine besondere Erkennbarkeit verleihen. Dieser Artikel zielt vor diesem Hintergrund darauf, die strukturelle Homologie (I) ebenso wie die strukturelle Differenz (II) von Leben und Geist herauszuarbeiten. Mein besonderes Interesse gilt dabei der Frage (III), inwiefern der Geist, sofern sein Begriff an genau diesem Wendungspunkte gewonnen wird, etwas Lebendiges bleibt, so sehr er vielleicht auch die Gestalt des Bewusstseinsgegenstandes „Leben“ überschreiten muss. This contribution traces an aesthetic shift in the concept of second nature that occurs around 1800 and raises the question as to what role art might play in a culture that already conceives of itself in generally aesthetic terms. The paper recalls Kant’s rejection of habit as a proper realization of ethical life and shows that in his third critique, Kant proposes a second nature of a different kind. To realize ethical life as a “second nature”, we cannot confine ourselves (...) to mere habituation but require a different type of second nature that is exemplified by the work of art. The paper asks what role art may adopt in an aestheticised culture arising from the success of such an aesthetic understanding in the wake of Kant, from Schiller through to Nietzsche. It argues that art redefines its role by taking not first nature but the second nature of ethical life as its main point of reference. Art thus reconceives itself as a self-reflection of our second nature. The paper discusses three models of such self-reflection: the aesthetic estrangement, the beautiful completion, and the dialectical renegotiation of our second nature. (shrink)

Adolescent decisions, especially in novel contexts, are often guided by affective evaluations rather than knowledge of the risks and probabilities of different outcomes. In this study, we used the affect-driven exploration model to illustrate how affective evaluations can play a critical role in driving early use of cigarettes, as well as the adaptive function of the resulting experiential learning in informing future affect and cigarette use. We analyzed five waves of data collected from a large, diverse community sample of adolescents (...) who were followed from early to late adolescence during years 2004–2010 to model trajectories of positive affect and risk perceptions and examined the associations of these trajectories with their self-reported cigarette use and dependence symptoms. Consistent with the ADE model, early initiators reported higher levels of positive affect at baseline, which we argue may have led them to try cigarettes. Notably, most early initiators reported a decline in positive affect over time, suggesting an experience-based shift in affective evaluations associated with cigarette use. Risk perceptions associated with cigarette use did not emerge as a significant predictor of cigarette use or subsequent dependence. Therefore, for deterring adolescent cigarette use, efforts to influence affect may be more effective than directly influencing risk perceptions. Despite the affective basis for initiating cigarette use, few adolescents engaged in early use or developed symptoms of dependence. Majority of those who engaged in early cigarette use showed a decline in positive affect, with corresponding increase in risk perceptions over time. Some early users may indeed continue to engage in cigarette use, but this is likely driven by the addictive properties of the drug. Overall these findings challenge the popular stereotype of impulsive and emotionally reactive behaviors during adolescence, and suggest a more nuanced interpretation of adolescent risk behavior. Die praktische Philosophie der Gegenwart hat in vielfacher Weise Gebrauch von dem Gedanken gemacht, dass unsere sittliche Konstitution uns zur „zweiten Natur“ wird. Diesem Gedanken kann eine therapeutische, eine affirmative und eine kritische Wendung gegeben werden: In der therapeutischen Verwendung soll uns die Erinnerung, dass praktische Vernunft uns zur zweiten Natur werden kann, helfen, einen Dualismus von Geist und Natur zu überwinden, ohne uns auf einen reduktiven Naturalismus festzulegen. In der affirmativen Wendung soll der Begriff der zweiten Natur die Exzellenzform (...) praktischen Könnens artikulieren, das gerade darin seine höchste Stufe erreichen soll, das Richtige unmittelbar sehen und tun zu können. In der kritischen Verwendung drückt die Formel schließlich aus, dass eine erworbene sittliche Konstitution, die uns zur bloßen zweiten Natur geworden ist, sich unserer freien Aneignung und Bestimmung entzieht und uns auf eine problematische Weise bestimmt. In all diesen Varianten ist bislang weitgehend unerörtert geblieben, dass die philosophische Tradition nicht nur unsere erworbenen sittlichen Tugenden als „zweite Natur“ bestimmt hat, sondern auch mit Blick auf die schöne Kunst von „zweiter Natur“ spricht. Auch das Kunstwerk ist nach einem neuzeitlichen Topos, den die Ästhetik um 1800 aufgreift und schnell verbindlich gemacht hat, als eine „andere“ oder „zweite“ Natur zu verstehen, die durch den Künstler hervorgebracht wird und von der ersten Natur spezifisch unterschieden ist: Das Kunstwerk ist ein Produkt der Freiheit, das erneut als Natur erscheint (Kant); es gibt der ersten eine „zweite Natur“ zurück, die zugleich „eine gefühlte, eine gedachte, eine menschlich vollendete“ ist (Goethe); und es vollbringt das Kunststück einer „gesetzten Unmittelbarkeit“, einer Setzung von Sein, die an die gesetzte Unmittelbarkeit der Gewohnheit erinnert (Hegel). Wenn man diese Bestimmungen etwas weiter folgt, lässt sich schnell erkennen, dass es sich hier nicht um eine zufällige Homonymie handelt, sondern dass durch die Bestimmung als „zweite Natur“ ein gemeinsamer Problemhorizont angedeutet ist, auf den sich die zweite Natur der Sitte und die andere Natur der Kunst auf unterschiedliche Weise beziehen. In welcher genauen Beziehung stehen aber nun die zweite Natur der Sittlichkeit und die andere Natur der Kunst? Das ist die Frage, der die in diesem Schwerpunkt versammelten Beiträge nachgehen. In his rich and complex narrative of the different routes of Anglo-American philosophy in the past decades, Karl Ameriks diagnoses a recent and growing “interest in the metaphysical side of German philosophy.” What is more, he embraces this “metaphysical turn,” arguing that there is “no responsible way” to approach the merits of the classical German tradition without engaging such metaphysical questions. Since both the content of his diagnosis and his plea for a renewed engagement with ‘metaphysics’ depend on his specific (...) use of this term, I will make two comments meant to clarify Ameriks’ understanding of this concept. I will suggest that, if we abide by his specific conception, much of the ‘new desire for metaphysics’ that the editors of this volume see at work in contemporary philosophy will remain unsatisfied. The first indication of this lies in the fact that, (I) it seems far from obvious that ‘metaphysical’ philosophy as Ameriks understands it is actually opposed to a number of self-proclaimed ‘post-metaphysical’ projects in contemporary philosophy. The second, more substantive point I want to highlight (II) is the specifically modest, defensive, and reflexive understanding of metaphysics that underlies Ameriks’ account. (shrink)

Gegen die verbreitete Vorstellung, dass Negativität im Interesse von mehr Selbstverwirklichung, Produktivität und Positivität überwunden oder be-grenzt werden muss, eröffnet dieser Band eine andere Perspektive. Er geht den verschiedenen Formen des Negativen in Kunst, Recht und Politik nach, um zu zeigen, dass es nicht allein eine Negativität gibt, die dem Gelingen im Weg steht oder zu dessen sicher beherrschtem Mittel wird. Die Beiträge des Bandes erweisen Negativität vielmehr als eine Kraft der Befreiung, die ein Gelingen anderer Art ermöglicht.

Wenn nach bleibenden philosophischen Beiträgen von Theodor W. Adorno gefragt wird, so werden meist drei mögliche Kandidaten erwogen: seine Analysen der spätkapitalistischen Kultur und Gesellschaft, seine Ästhetische Theorie und der von ihm entwickelte besondere Typ philosophischer Kritik, der unter dem Titel negative Dialektik bekannt ist. Seltener, wenn überhaupt, wird jemand die Ansicht vertreten, ein bleibender Beitrag Adornos bestehe in einer besonderen Moralphilosophie. Zwar trägt das am weitesten verbreitete Werk Adornos, die Minima Moralia, die Moral bereits im Titel. Jenes Buch aber (...) hebt schon in den ersten Zeilen mit der These an, dass die Lehre vom richtigen Leben heute nicht mehr der eigentliche Bereich der Philosophie sein könne, da das, was der Philosophie einmal »Leben hieß, [...] zur Sphäre des Privaten und dann bloß noch des Konsums geworden« sei. Statt einer Lehre vom guten Leben bleibt für die Philosophie nur eine Reflexion auf seine Beschädigung möglich. Wo immer Adorno sich der Moralphilosophie selbst zuwendet, markiert er in diesem Sinne vor allem ihre Antinomien und Aporien. Die Annahme liegt nahe, dass die Herausstellung solcher Widersprüche nur darauf zielen kann, uns vorzuführen, dass die Moralphilosophie ihren Gegenstand nicht – oder: nicht mehr – zu denken vermag und allenfalls expressive Funktionen hat für eine Gesellschaft, die von Antagonismen durchzogen ist. Eine positive Theorie der Moral scheint in diesem Sinne durch die Form unserer Gesellschaft und die ihr korrespondierenden Formen des Denkens verstellt. Gegen diese durchaus begründete Lesart möchte ich im Folgenden die These vertreten, dass Adornos Beiträge in diesem Feld noch eine weiterreichende Deutung erlauben. Die Aporien der Moralphilosophie verweisen nicht allein auf ihnen unterliegende gesellschaftliche Widersprüche, sondern zugleich auf innere Spannungen, die dem moralischen Handeln wesentlich sind: In der kritischen Reflexion auf die moderne Moralphilosophie und moralisches Handeln in der modernen Gesellschaft gewinnt Adorno eine dialektische Bestimmung dieses Handelns, dergemäß es sich dadurch auszeichnet, dass es Widersprüche des Handelns auf besondere Weise austrägt. Die ›Aporien der Moralphilosophie‹ verweisen für Adorno so auf eine ›Moral der Aporien‹ – sie verweisen auf innere Spannungen, die für das Moralische selbst konstitutiv sind. Moralisches Handeln ist dadurch charakterisiert, dass es die Spannungen von Besonderem und Allgemeinen, Freiheit und Gesetz, Natur und Geist, die menschliches Handeln wesentlich ausmachen, als Spannungen aushält und austrägt. Eine aporetische Moralphilosophie verweist so nicht zwingend auf die schlichte Unmöglichkeit ihres Gegenstands oder ihre eigene Unangemessenheit. Im Herausstellen innerer Widersprüche des Moralischen kann vielmehr im Gegenteil eine Erkenntnis des Moralischen liegen: eine Erkenntnis seiner dialektischen und gespannten Natur. (shrink)

Das Wort "Ereignis" (evenement) figuriert in den Texten Derridas von Husserls Wegin die Geschichte am Leitfaden der Geometrie (Derrida 1987; frz. Orig.: 1962) bis hin zu seinen jüngsten Texten (vgl. z.B. Derrida 2001a) in sehr unterschiedlicher Weise, mal beiläufig, mal mit Gewicht, mal als attackierte, mal als heranzitierte oder auch deutlich in Anspruch genommene Kategorie. Nichts liegt näher als der Versuch, das eigentliche Ereignis-Denken Derridas auf eine bestimmte Gruppe von Texten, eine bestimmte Phase seines Werkes zu beschränken. Schon die Form (...) der besonderen textuellen Konfiguration, die die Signatur Derridas trägt, spricht allerdings gegen ein solches Vorgehen: Es handelt sich um eine Konfiguration von Texten, die durch Insistenz und Rekurrenz gekennzeichnet ist, in diesem Sinne eher eine "durchlaufende" Kette bildet und dabei zugleich durch das laufende auf sich Zurückkommen die früheren Glieder der Kette in ein jeweils neues Licht setzt. Jenseits dieses allgemeinen Arguments spricht gegen eine Beschränkung auf einen vermeintlich homogenen Ausschnitt aus Derridas Werk zudem die spezifische Hypothese, dass die Besonderheit des Ereignisses bei Derrida darin liegt, dass es eine Reihe von Oppositionen auf spezifische Weise durchstreicht, die zum Teil eher zwischen Texten als in einer frontalen Aussage Derridas durchquert werden. Daher nehme ich in diesem Beitrag, in der textuellen Kette Derridas zurück- und vorlaufend, eine Reihe von Bestimmungsmomenten des Ereignisses auf, ohne mich auf eine Phase oder ein vorab begrenztes Feld bezogener Begriffe zu beschränken. The paper delineates a modern conception of second nature that takes shape around 1800. Instead of just repeating, once again, the ancient topos that habit is a second nature, this modern conception makes use of a different paradigm for the understanding of cultural self-production, namely the work of art. According to this conception, the development of a second nature is not a question of mere habituation, but rather an essentially creative and expressive process whereby we take up nature and reorganize (...) it in such a way that it points beyond itself and becomes expressive beyond subjective mastery. The formation of culture and the production of a second nature is thus revealed as an aesthetic practice, a complex dialectical exercise, and a social practice of objectification. This conception of second nature which the paper traces back to Kant, Schiller, and Hegel not only allows us to grasp the relationship between spirit and nature more adequately than some of the neo-Aristotelian conceptions that dominate the current philosophical debate. It also opens up an instructive critical perspective on our contemporary aesthetic self-understanding. (shrink)

Schrift, Akustik, Geld, Raum, Sinn, elektronische Kommunikationsmittel, Zeit, Kunst, Macht. Was kann man an Bestimmtheit von einem Begriff erwarten, der angeblich all dies umgreifen soll - dem Begriff des Mediums in Niklas Luhmanns Theorie sozialer Systeme? Die Elemente der Liste scheinen zu verschiedenartig, als dass man sich eine sinnvolle Kategorie vorstellen könnte, die diese Dinge als Exemplare derselben Art vorzustellen in der Lage wäre. Welchen Sinn es machen mag, dass all dies dennoch an unterschiedlichen Stellen in der Theorie Luhmanns als (...) »Medium« unterschieden und bezeichnet wird, kann deutlich werden, wenn man genauer beachtet, welcher Art diese Charakterisierung ist: All diesen Dingen wird nicht einfach das Wesen eines Mediums zugeschrieben. Sie werden vielmehr relativ auf einen bestimmten Kontext und mithilfe einer Unterscheidung von Medium und Form charakterisiert: Sie erweisen sich in Beziehung zu etwas anderem (einer Form) und in einem bestimmten operativen Zusammenhang (relativ auf ein bestimmtes System) als Medium, ohne darum an sich und allein das Wesen eines Mediums zu besitzen.
